Youtube link. A Polish survivor of Auschwitz made her own film in 1947 that showed what took place in the death camp. She vowed if she ever survived to make such a film. There aren't any English subtitles but this is about as authentic as it gets next to having cameras in the camp, of course.

What’s amazing is that the sight and smell of Aushwitz (even though most of the prisoner’s had been death marched away) was so horrible, that it caused Red Army troops, who had seen horrific fighting and were some of the most ruthless fighters in history, to break down.

I dug through my local newspaper archives to see what was mentioned about Auschwitz and Dachau at the time. Maybe a half a dozen stories from 45 to 52 and never on first page.
