In Japan those in power are divided as to what to do as war with the Western powers looks more and more likely. Meanwhile in the USSR the war gets deadlier and deadlier, but also more and more confusing with leadership conflicts on both sides of the front.

Why are you linking today’s date 79 years ago?

If it’s WWII you want to discuss, plenty happened today 80 years ago:

8 August 1940

31 German planes were shot down over Britain in the Battle of Britain

Hitler signed the paperwork authorizing “Operation Aufbau Ost” (literally buildup East) to prepare for the German invasion of the USSR in 1941.

The August Offer was made by the British Viceroy of India Linlithgow to the powers-that-be in India to address political issues after the War’s end if India supports the Allied war effort.

US Marines were advancing inland on Guadalcanal after landing the day before.

Edit: My bad...that was 1942.
