Mission number 84. Eighth Air Force.

376 Heavy bombers launched against targets beyond fighter escort range. 60 bombers shot down.

The ETO was no joke.

84% return rate is pretty good, but it would suck to be in the 16%.

If you got the same numbers every time, it's 316/376 to the 25th.

The 8th and other bomber commands suffered some of the highest casualty rates of the war.

Another day in August 1943. Five Medals of Honor and 56 Distinguished Service Crosses, plus numerous other awards. Essentially every man in the mission received a decoration for valor. LINK

Strategic bombing by daylight wasn't looking like a good idea that august.

The 8th Air Force didn’t suffer some of the highest casualty rates of the war. The 8th Air Force suffered the highest casualty rate of the war. And that’s even counting the casualty rates of both Army and Marine infantry divisions.

American submariners suffered almost a 25% casualty rate. About 16000 went on patrol and ~3500 are on eternal patrol. I think that surpasses the 8th Air Force.

Either way, extremely tough service for both groups.
