re: Attention Phillips CPAP, etc users: Recall notice

Love my CPAP & my CPAP loves me. Truly, it’s a perfect microcosm of why shite costs so much in this country, particularly anything medically related and I sell joints, not blunts, but hips, knees, and shoulders for a living. They have a nationwide recall on the Phillips models because .03% of machines could possibly have foam dislodge and travel down the hose and be ingested. It’s impossible to happen if you use a filter on your machine(99%) of users and has only happened in hot, humid environments so if your sleeping with your CPAP in a sweltering jungle environment w/o a filter on your machine you might have a class action lawsuit.

I would fricking hate taking the calls from all the people freaking out about this.

Had no idea there was a recall. Got a registered letter from ups today. Mine is one of the bad ones that they recommend not to use. They registered it and said they can replace it in 12 months. my cardiologist told me not to skip a night since I have heart issues. Bunch of bullshite.

A home CPAP unit does not keep you alive
This whole statement is wrong. You have no idea what you are talking about. Iam not a fatty. But don't judge them either. I have a genetics heart condition that almost killed me two years ago. Cardiologist told me not to skip even night with the CPAP. When you can't breath at night, it puts a huge strain on the heart. So don't post on shite you have no idea about.

Silly post. It's responsible for facilitating breathing and preventing severe apnea episodes that can cause death. In short, CPAPs prevent premature death for those with severe apnea.
It's not like an oxygen tank that someone would need every hour of the day. By your definition, that keeps someone alive.

You don’t stop breathing
quote:So in other words, you can't breathe while your nasal/orowhatever is blocked. Got it. You stop breathing temporarily.
your airway is blocked by your soft tissue in the nasal/oropharyngeal airway

We have a 2 minute voicemail explaining everything in detail for the pts that call with questions. They still leave messages.
The craziest ones are those that got their pap 4 years ago and haven’t been back to get supplies since.

quote:I've been a respiratory therapist for 25 years and have worked extensively the sleep disorder field for the last 20 years, I don't need to look up central sleep apnea. I am well versed in that neurological disorder. Care to guess what the most prescribed treatment for CSA is? BIPAP!! Sometimes with a backup respiratory rate, which would be a BIPAP S/T.
I’ve been a respiratory therapist for 31 year… thanks for your insight …
It’s “obstructive sleep apnea” which is a misnomer… It’s not central sleep apnea, you may want to look it up….
You don’t stop breathing, your airway is blocked by your soft tissue in the nasal/oropharyngeal airway…
You don’t actually stop breathing…
The flow/pressure helps keep your airway open while you ventilate… A home cpap device does not ventilate you..
I noticed you you only quouted one part of my post, and skipped over the part where I called you out for being a dumbass. Wonder why that is? Maybe because you had an epiphany and for a second, realized I was right?
Sleep apnea, whether from an obstructive or from the central nervous system malfunctioning, still means you stop breathing! CPAP eliminates the obstruction, so a person continues to breath naturally. It's is not a device that helps you sleep, it maintains a patent airway so that you can continue to breath. You actually do stop breathing. I can see that you've never read a sleep study, or even understand one if you did.
Here, I'll help you and take up where your education let you down:

Apnea (BrE: apnoea[1]) is the cessation of breathing. During apnea, there is no movement of the muscles of inhalation,[citation needed] and the volume of the lungs initially remains unchanged.

quote:Dude, that is just completely wrong on so many levels. 1st of all, you are quoting the price of one of the cheapest machines made. That's like saying because a Cadillac Escalade and a Yugo both have 4 wheels, they are the same.
I paid 395 for my last Cpap from Cpap.com. If you use insurance they will sign you up for a service provider at twice the cost for first year, 700-800 dollars per year for 2-5th years.
Secondly, $700-800 year for 2-5 years?
I work with tons of insurance companies......EVERYDAY. I only know of one that will pay for, and replace a CPAP under 5 years, and that company only does it every 3 years. Like I posted earlier, BCBS of AL is one of the highest paying insurances in the country, and they pay $893 for a CPAP, heated humidifier, and mask. I compared the Resmed AS10 Auto in my previous post. $8 difference between a high paying insurance and your website store. Medicare and Tricare rent to own, for 15 months. Can't get another for 5 years. The reimbursement rate is so low, a lot of places have stopped taking those insurances. Hell, a lot of doctors have stopped taking new Medicare patients for the same reason.
If some place had you paying $700-800/year for your cpap, you got ripped off.

quote:There are some good ozone sanitizers, just don't get one that works by infusing the MACHINE with ozone. There are some that come with a bag, pumps ozone in the bag that contains your mask, tubing, humidifier chamber. The actual parts that harbor harmful bacteria and viruses. For most people, simply washing with soap and water is all you need.
Damn. I guess I'm glad I never got one of those expensive arse ozone gadgets. I looked at SoClean and Sleep 8 and to me it just wasn't worth it. I'll wash the stuff with soap and be just fine.
I guess I'm kind of fricked if my PAP quits on me. I've got the S9 and it's been running for 8 years. With the supply on the market being about zero, I don't know if I could get a replacement. Oh well... such is life.

Philips stoked the fire when they advised everyone with an affected machine, including hospital ventilators, to stop using them immediately. In reality, if you haven't used a "SoClean" or used your machine outdoors, during Summer, in the Amazon jungle, there is little chance the foam insulation has deteriorated.

Want to hear something really disgusting? Ever heard of a CPAP with roach infestation? I've seen it myself, and then found out it isn't really that rare. Some nasty, arse people walk this Earth!

They aren’t talking about CPAP here. They are talking about the trilogy ventilator that is also recalled.
Didn't realize the Trilogy was involved... Is it having the same issues as the cpap devices...?

Yeah I remember seeing that one and that it was cheaper than the So Clean. Still expensive, but worth it in the long run if it saves you time on cleaning.
I really don't mind the cleaning so I think I'm fine without one. Personally, I don't even wash the tubing. Some think that's gross but I just replace it every few months. Basically my people call me whenever I'm due according to my insurance plan.
I always wash the mask and cushions. I use a full face and it gets disgusting if it's not taken care of.
