European colonialism was terrible...
Post-colonial third world nations are exponentially worse.

Prestige is great beer, Barbancourt is great rum, been to that beach Conan is at (Cocoye Beach) - absolutely beautiful. Pull up in a boat and someone greets you with a table and ice chest full of drinks, catches lobster for you to serve with plaintains and pikliz. Jacmel and Basin Bleu is also amazing
Haitians are mostly great people. Flown in/out of Port-au-Prince 6-7 times and gotten dinner there once…. I cant imagine a worse city in the world, luckily only heard gunshots on three rides from the airport. First time driver kinda laughed and said welcome to Haiti, second and third times other people were in the car and I was the one telling them welcome to Haiti
Its crazy how nice that country could be but its so shitty and the good people there just have no shot in life unfortunately

Is there anything redeeming about that garbage country?
Very beautiful if you could push 85% of the Haitians out.

1) kill all the whites
2) kill everyone that even acts vaguely civilized cause they’re white-ish
3) attempt to invade the Spanish side of Hispaniola without guns, lose by a casualty margin of 60:1
Sounds like a certain crowd we have in America today.

Clear cut and sold off the timber, now complain about mudslides.
Fun fact: the highest point in Haiti is over 8000 feet, much higher than the highest point in the US east of the Rockies.

I knew a retired military officer that swore if you were on a ship bound for Port-au-Prince, you could smell it before you saw it.
He was as serious as he could be. He said the filth in Haiti had to be seen to be believed.

My parents (stay at home Mom and truck driver dad) have worked tirelessly to get a school started in a village outside of jacmel. They used to go down a few times a year to bring supplies because it was cheaper to carry everything in luggage than ship it. They have spent tens of thousands of dollars buying books, food and supplies to get this place self sufficient. Yet nothing has ever caught on.
It's sad but they have tried everything, it's a hopeless mission at this point because my dad is nearing retirement and can't support it anymore.
They also haven't been able to go down there since before the president was assassinated.
I've been through Port au prince once in 2010, a few months after the earthquake and the squalor is unfathomable. It's a hopeless country unfortunately.
