The Diocese of Lafayette says "hold my beer". I'm referencing the Gilbert Gauthe affair, among others. Reading about the whole thing is very infuriating and depressing.

Today Aymond finally came out with a litany of additional context. 6-minute video.
Youtube
Cliffs-
Aymond says Second Harvest leadership refused to renew a tolling agreement in the bankruptcy, under which the plaintiffs have agreed to pause lawsuits against Second Harvest and other affiliated church entities like individual church parishes and schools, while negotiating a settlement (per Aymond, Second Harvest was one of the parties named in the original lawsuit). The agreement was to expire on January 31.
Some Second Harvest board members wanted a formal separation from the archdiocese for over 2 years, but the archdiocese owns the assets. That's where the $16 million came in - an offer price for church assets. Aymond says SH was never asked to contribute towards the abuse settlement.
The plaintiffs would surely sue to block the archdiocese from giving away buildings, warehouses and other property it owns to Second Harvest, so that's probably why second harvest was told they'd have to buy the assets in order to legally split from the church. Doesn't look like they got too far down the formal divorce path.

Yes, and reading between the lines, it looks like some of the Second Harvesters board members were the ones who went to the media with this “bombshell”of misinformation, and ignored the Archbishop and his lawyers in trying to explain that they can’t just exit the church a) without paying for the properties, and b) as if it would end they legal exposure to the plaintiffs, and c) would upend the current process which would expose other Catholic ministries, including schools and parishes.
And we can thank the hapless David Hammer for running with this story without communicating with the Archdiocese.
