Anyone with a diabetic dog?

We have a 4 year old basset mix who has just been diagnosed with diabetes. Does anyone have experience with this?
I am trying to determine what we are looking at in cost, vet visits, special food etc.
For the OTs sake I have already considered the steak and trip to the clearing angle.

Please tell me you dismissed this even more quickly than you considered it. If not, please give your dog to someone who will actually love it.
At any rate... yes, I've had a dog with diabetes. Twice daily shots, once the dosage was dialed in... it really was no big deal. Took a couple of day long stay at the vet to do a glucose tolerance test. Stay on top of cataracts.
It's certainly in no way a reason to the clearing, as you put it.

Had a dog with epilepsy, needed medicine daily, learned from this board don't buy the meds from the vet.
Have the vet write the script and fill it at CVS/Walgreens for less than half the cost.

It was a joke about the clearing. Someone on the OT usually volunteers.

Ok, then. You may keep your dog.

Would agree with the second post completely. My dog has had diabetes for five years, and glaucoma and cataracts for three. It is highly likely he will get cataracts in time.
Other than what was said before, he got used to the shots pretty quickly. You have to cut out any high sugar treats. Switch to higher quality grain-free food, as it has less carbs.
The insulin at Wal-Mart is HEAVILY discounted. It's the cheapest place I've found. I don't remember the price, but it very minimal. Maybe $20 I believe it last a month or two. I've never really measured.

I don't treat my dog like a human child. So I would put it down.

For me, it was roughly 22 bucks a vial... that would last... maybe 5 or 6 weeks? Reli-ON type N if memory serves me correctly.
Supposedly, there's some new meds you can look into that, if you start giving them early enough, will help prevent or prolong the onset of cataracts.
Also.. vet said we had to be on the lookout for pancreatitis. T-dog got it once... the vet said that that he had actually seen or heard of it cure a couple of dogs of diabetes. Personally, I think he was just trying to make us feel better about the pancreatitis, because taht was a 3 day stay at the vet and roughly a $2,500 bill.

I did. We put him down earlier this year because of cancer, not diabetes.
Insulin 2x a day, regular glucose checks at vet. You can get insulin / syringes at Walmart for pretty cheap. Diabetes will cause blindness in almost every case, unfortunately. It's some extra work, but not awful.

Look at the upside... if you wife wants to rearrange the furniture... you have a valid excuse not to.
