Five months is not long to sit on a case like this. If he sits a year and hires a good lawyer for 5-10 k he could cop to some felonies and get 10 years suspend all but one, get credit for the time he has served and get out of jail and carry some paper(be on parole).
The two things going for him are no prior record (this is huge) and dirty cop on the scene. ( also huge).
I am just giving you a rule of thumb. But I do this kind of work in Louisiana.

This is basically what I was getting at in previous post. He could skate with a good lawyer.
