Anyone live or have lived there and can tell me about the area? I'm familiar with other places in NC, but not this specific region. Is it a decent place to live? Any kind of LSU alumni network there?

Nice town but you will find yourself driving to other cities for more action. I would stop there from time to time competing in some sports tournaments.

The northern outskirts of W.S. feature some beautiful countryside

I really liked living in Cary, NC

I do. I'm originally from Upstate SC. I like it. It's more artsy/eclectic than it's closest neighbor Greensboro. Similar in size to Greenville, SC. About 1.5 hr from some decent snow skiing/ mountains and 3 hrs from the beach. Home to Krispy Kreme, RJ Reynolds, Hanes Brands, Texas Pete, Wake Forest University...as long as you don't like dancing/clubbing you'd like it. More of a bar/brewery & restaurant scene. Winston has folks from all over so I'm sure you'd find some LSU alumns.

I currently live in Winston-Salem. The city has transitioned from textiles and Tabaco to health care, education (universities), arts and banking.

Population is slightly over 200K. Downtown area is undergoing a resurgence. Cigarette factories now converted to lofts. Lots of major projects downtown in the works to bring more shops, restaurants and condos.

It's a great time to move here, especially before the prices go up.

The population is more Southern than Raleigh or Charlotte, both have lots of Northerners.

Most of the major concerts end up landing in Greensboro (15 minutes down I40) or Charlotte. The major airport (PTI) is also in Greensboro, though Charlotte is not too far and is normally cheaper to fly out of.

Let me know if you have specific questions. I can't speak to the LSU alumni but I work with two LSU fans. If it is like the Arkansas alumni, it is probably in Greensboro.

Lived there for 5 years during grad school at Wake. I enjoyed my time there. Plenty to do, nice downtown, some very beautiful neighboring countryside. Some really great local eating establishments. I also hear lots of new things/businesses are sprouting up as well.
20 min from Greensboro, which has a slightly bigger city feel to it. Manageable distance from Charlotte and Raleigh (which both had LSUCarolinas alumni chapters when I lived there), for when you want to take in something new. 4 hours to the Wilmington area beaches (Wilmington is one of my favorite cities in NC; be sure to sight-see Boone and Asheville, too, as they're a few hours away, but very beautiful). The only thing I DIDN'T really like moving from LSU/Baton Rouge was the lame-arse "tailgating" before games and boring ACC football ;)Wake's undergrad campus is very pretty, though.

I lived there for 2 years, and have family and friends there. I go visit often.

It is a nice place, but like others, it has its better areas and worse ones.

I wasn't aware of an LSU network, but ran across people in LSU gear pretty often.

Like the poster above said, if there's anything specific, ask away.
