Having said all that, when you get them installed every scratch and ding will make you want to kill whoever cause it, until you realize they work themselves out and blend in in no time.

There is a 6 month period that will truly test your marriage though.

When I installed mine, I finished with Waterlox, it gives me the ablilty to touch up the flooring without refinishing everything. One of the main reasons I used it was because of our dogs...

You obviously don't understand what I said. Scratching is not the same as denting. A cheap finish scratches very easily.
Pine and cypress floors dent much more easily than oak or ipe, cumaru, maple or Australian cypress pine, etc. These woods are much more dense than heart pine, which in turn is harder than white, or yellow pine from a non-old growth tree. Old growth pine or virgin pine was from the original stands of pine trees that were growing here for hundreds of years. The trees that new heart pine come from are decades old, not centuries.
Much of what is being sold today is not antique heart pine, but is a less desirable "new heart pine". Much softer and many more loops and swirls in the grain, as well as more knots.
Quarter sawn wood is indeed harder than the more conventional cut available today.
If you believe quarter sawn antique heart pine isn't beautiful, walk into a Hayes Town home and get back to me.

Albany Woodworks just outside of Hammond. I haggled with them and they came down from their first price.

quarter-sawn doesn't look as good

Quarter and rift are the only cuts that produce ray-fleck... which is a premium.

So not only is it more dimensionaly stable, it's better looking.

Edit: no ray fleck in pine...my bad.
