Costa Rica is great. The people are really friendly and the food is amazing. San Jose is pretty slummy but they have 2 dollar rummy at Hotel Del Rey with free drinks so you can sit there and play for hours with a negligible amount of money. I would not spend too much time in San Jose unless you know people there because it is pretty slummy. If you're there on a Monday, one of the best places to go out while down there is Cuartel De La Boca Del Monte. Great live music/dancing and always has a good crowd on Mondays.

Outside of that, if you want to get away, I'd rent a car and go to tamarindo. The drive is about 4 hours but you get to see the country side and experience Costa Rica. Won't be a whole lot of tourists because the summer isn't busy season. It's on the Pacific coast so you still might be able to charter trips from there. The beach and people is great there.

Santa Teresea is a small town of about 1,500 people 3ish hours from both Tamarindo and Jaco. It's a world renowned surfing town and one of the best beaches you can find. Very few tourists will be there and it has a slow moving pace of life. Tom Brady has a house out there that he helicopters into. It's truly a get away place.

Jaco was good, not great. We stayed on the beach and the beach there isn't great. They have some good bars and Taco Bar is the best taco place I've ever been to. If you have money, Los Suenos is a gorgeous resort and it'll be like going to Florida. Great marina, golf course, and restaurants.

Overall, I love Costa Rica and look forward to going again one day in the future.

What about the crocodiles in Jaco? I know the famous crocodile bridge is in Jaco but was wondering how often they make it out where you surf? I read a couple from Austria was attacked last year. I couldn't enjoy the surf knowing a saltwater croc may swim by.

Jaco is awesome. Go surfing unless you are too fat. If you are too fat just buy women I guess. I brought mine with me.

I went to Panama and Costa Rica fishing about 10 years ago. Stayed two nights in Panama City and one night in Costa Rica. During the week we stayed on the mother ship.

You fishing the Hannibal bank?

Not an issue. The crocks are near the rivers. Not just hanging out in the surf.

We really liked Puerto Viejo down on the Caribbean coast. Getting there sucked, Limon was a dump. The surfing was much more intense, and so was the night life. Cool little place though.

Memories from there are seared into my brain. I've taken many epic trips, but Costa Rica still tops the list.

All these messages are spot on to everything I've read and heard. Can't wait to experience Costa Rica for the first time. Who knows I may want to retire there in 25 years. Thanks for all the info fellas. The OT did not disappoint.

i would check out Manuel Antonio if yall could. It is about 2 hours from San jose on the pacific and it is becoming a very popular beach now. They have great women and a lot of planes that are resturaunts now. Big advice is don't go deep swimming in deep water because of the ocean currents. It is very dangerous in Costa Rica. In the future if you ever go back to Costa Rica go in late December and early January. It is summer when it is winter here and great weather. I never go in the summer because it is raining season over there and rains every freaking day. Jaco beach is real big on surfing and fishing so yall will have a lot of fun. Very friendly people and always great them by saying pura vida.

Also, go check out the Jesús negro statue and eat some of the local food while you do.

Good times!

Wonderful country--you are going to have a blast. I remember some consumer goods being much more expensive but lots of things are cheaper than you would expect.
Strap up with double rubber if messing with the ticas--some of 'em got stuff that won't wash off with soap and water. Some seedy areas in all parts of the country but pay attention and you'll be fine. You will definitely want to go back.

I've been living and working down there on and off for 15 years. May isn't the best time for fishing, but Ticas are biting year round.
