Mr. Brown,

I am a huge fan of Old Charter 8. Just curious why the handle was removed from the ½ gallon and if it would be possible to re-attach it?


Below are a few safety issues that the handle-less bottle creates that I would like to point out:
- Potential wrist injury- Human beings have to contort their wrist at an unnatural angle to pour liquid from a vessel. A vessel the size and weight of the half gallon could potentially cause serious ligament damage and possible tendon rupture.
- Lower extremity damage- For decades the Charter 8 consumers have been accustomed to grasping a handle to secure the bottle. It could take years for us to adjust to the no-handle bottle, and in that time there is no telling how many bottles will slip through our hands and strike our knees, ankles, feet and toes.
- Spillage and vehicle damage- When one purchases a half gallon of Old Charter 8, the most logical place to store it for your ride home is on the back seat of your vehicle. The unique handle that is/was on the bottle of Charter 8 would not allow the bottle to roll off of the seat and crash to the floor. Obviously a perfectly round bottle will roll off of a vehicle seat and could cause a tremendous financial burden to the customer as he/she will have to have their vehicle cleaned.
- Collapse of the homemade pepper sauce industry- I’m not sure if you are aware of the millions of Charter 8 customers who store their homemade pepper sauces in empty Charter 8 bottles. These bottles will become impractical because of all the reasons mentioned above.


I have personally witnessed a max exodus from life-long Charter 8 drinkers to other brands of whiskeys. I for one have been resisting the change, but I’m not sure how much longer I can hold out.

Thank you also for being a fan of Charter 8, much appreciated!

The handle was removed from Charter 8 as part of a brand overhaul. The previous bottle was decidedly old, tired, cheap looking and not in keeping with the 8 year old whiskey inside the bottle. In creating the new bottle we wanted to replicate the design of the liter and 750ml bottle which has much more character.

We looked at the handle question closely and decided to go without a handle, in line with other competitive brands i.e. Jack Daniels, Evan Williams, Makers Mark. Simultaneously, we also introduced a lightweight PET 1.75L bottle, which is becoming increasingly popular on more expensive brands in the event that anyone had an issue with the new bottle. At this time we have no plans to add a handle back to the glass 1.75L, sorry.

I very much appreciate your taking the time to write and hope you will continue to be a fan of Charter long into the future.
