Anyone have a dog with seizures they medicate?
My lab has had them for the past 2 years. But they were once every 4-5 months and lasted like 2-3 mins each time so the vet said to just monitor and if they get more frequent or last longer we would look into medication. Well last night she had one that lasted about 20mins and was so weak after she couldnt walk for an hr. Spoke with the vet this morn and she wants to do bloodwork and put her on phenobarbital. Im fine with this but she says it needs to be taken twice a day. This is the issue. Me and my wife leave early for work, the 2 labs are in a fenced in back yard. And this particular one just wants to play and its all i can do to get her to eat every evening. So i dont think i will be able to walk to the fence and just hand her the pill. Anyone give their dogs the pill once a day? Just looking to see who has used this drug with their pets and how they felt about it. Thanks

Wrap the pill in some cheese and give it to the dog. It'll for sure get eaten/taken.

I give one of my dogs a pill twice a day...but I just throw it in his food bowl. It's also admittedly a little less important so if he eats around it or something instead of eating it then it isn't a big deal.

One of our yorkies has epilepsy and had seizures fairly often, maybe once a week.

We give him phenobarbital every morning and hasn't had a seizure since. We have to bring him in every 6 months or so to have his levels checked and get a refill. Not that expensive either, about $30 for 90 pills.

We had 2 Akitas (1 worse than the other_ that had seizures due to the flea/tick stuff we used but the seizures went away when we changed brands.

I do not recall the brands involved....sorry.

mine take a flea and tick pill during summer months but not now. So cant be that with mine. But i do give them heartguard heartwom pills and gave her one yest an hr before seizure. The vet said on the phone she didnt believe the heartworm pill should do it. But i do have on my phone 3-4 other times documented that she had seizure 1-2 days after the pill... could just be coincidence

Have an Aussie who had his first seizure about a year ago and he's been on phenobarbital ever since. He's had a total of 2 seizures since, and they happened within 12 hours of each other. Blood work is definitely important so they can measure the appropriate amount to give your dog (too little = seizure prone, too much = drugged up, non-motivated dog). My dog's seizures weren't nearly as long as yours, so I'd have to caution you about expecting the same results. She may still have the occasional seizure, but phenobarbital should REALLY help.

It isn't...change brands and see what happens

Our Shih Tzu has them, used to be much more frequent, changed his food and it helped a lot. Went from 1-2 a week, to 3-4 a year. Good luck.

Does anyone have a dog with seizures that he medicates.

Fixed it for you.

Dip pill in honey or peanut butter. Buried in wet food usually works too.
