Doesn’t have to be that way. I got another job offer for a lot more money. I didn’t want to leave but the money was enough to make me. So I showed the offer letter to my boss, he matched it, and four years later I’m still here and happy.
If you’re happy at a place, give them the chance to keep you.

I’ve been with my current employer 12 years. I’ve switched roles 3 times. I know I’m paid under market value. I’m only staying with them to get to age 55 so I can retire and take the unvested stock with me. I’ll be handing them my resignation letter in March and explain I will retire at the end of the year, but will be going on PTO in November, will be handing over all the assets, and they can kiss my Rosie white arse good bye.
I am telling you my story because I have stayed too long. The partnership, or whatever you want to call it, isn’t working and it’s time to move on. That’s in the best interest of both parties.
After 5 years, if you’re not being promoted and/or getting raises, then it is time to move on. You’re viewed as a B-level team member. This is how I ended up in my current situation.

If someone is willing to pay you more than a company you have with for 15 years, take it, as long as you’re sure you will enjoy the work and culture at least as much as your current job.

Don’t ever try and blackmail me with another company’s offer. You can walk right out the door and never comeback

I’ve done it and the lessons I’ve learned are two fold.
1) be prepared to walk. If you don’t walk, you’ll be on the chopping block if they need to save costs.
2) if successful, you’ll be on the chopping block if they need to save costs.
If you like your situation, simply ask for a raise and explain why you need one. If you are ambivalent about your situation, use the leverage.
