If you're getting an actual audition for a co-starring role (1 line and up) you probably already have an agent, as they get the breakdowns from the casting directors in the cities they are shooting. You will then receive your audition email from your agent (or if you have to fill out an NDA first as with all Marvel projects, you will get the sides directly from the CD) and you will most likely put it to 'tape'.
It will then be uploaded to websites such as Actor's Access for the CD's to watch hundreds of them and if they want to see you in person for a call back then you will get that email or phone call from your agent as well. That day you will wait outside in a waiting room for up to an hour with anywhere from 2-50 people who look like you or are your type...when you go in you will vomit whatever you rehearsed to the CD and then probably do it one more time with a slight change.
From there it is out of your control. If they want you they will put you on first refusal with possibly 1-2 other people and of that tiny group one of you will be booked for the role.
That's how it works here in Atlanta anyway with exceptions here and there such as in person initial auditions.
However, if you don't have an agent and you are just answering an 'open call', it's probably for a) extra work or b) sitting on a couch and catching baby batter in your mouth

If the casting director's office looks like this, run away.
If you run a black light in that room, it will blind you.
The couch alone will glow with the power of a thousand suns.

yes, i am a local actor in the south east. I've audition all over from new orleans, fl, and atlanta...And what u hear is true about acting....Tons of rejection, no feedback on why you didn't roles, etc...
But the process goes something like this...
Your agent sends you sides for the role casting requests you for. Your audition is usually the next day in front of casting and nerdy assistant. You go in do your thing and most of hte time casting doesn't say any feedback, just thank you...And you wait to see if you get a callback in front of the director which is usually a week later.

thanks for the info. how'd you get an agent?

it's free to get an agent. But in order to get one you need headshots, some sort of an acting resume that's not extra work, and you need to be in acting classes
