Any tips on using trip protection insurance when having to cancel/miss a flight?

Wife and I have plane tickets for next weekend but are now unable to go due to a family medical issue. My wife's father had an emergency surgery and they're going to need some help for a while.
I called Allianz Insurance to make sure I was doing everything correctly and they said they need proof about her father's illness and proof of the surgery date.
My FIL is hyper sensitive about releasing personal information. He didn't get a debit card until about a decade ago because he didn't want his money associated with anything digital.
Before I talk to him about getting the documentation (which he will want to say no), are there any other ways to get my money refunded from Delta? Or any other ways to use the trip protection insurance without providing personal medical info?

we buy trip insurance for nearly every flight. we have had 2 occasions to cash it in...hospitalization of a Family member, and a hurricane going to the island we booked our flight for.
The hurricane situation was easy...the National Weather Service issued a warning there, and no problem.Money refunded quickly.
The hospitalization was a much tougher refund. Had to provide a form letter provided by the trip insurer to the doctor to fill out, which as you can imagine IS NOT a high priority for MD's....so THAT took quite a while to get. But we did in fact get our money back.
Be prepared to jump through hoops...and have the insurance company force you to provide much more evidence than any common sense person would need. Oh, and call them every day until they relent.

The one time I had to use it was on my trip to Istanbul and Attaturk airport as attacked. Easy refund and well worth it

It’s possible they just give you Delta credit you can use later?
But I’m not sure what all you need, a simple note from his doctor signed is probably enough and that doesn’t have to list the specific issue possibly? You need to contact the travel insurance to see exactly what they require. No one else will know.

I’ve never used trip protection. I just don’t get the same enjoyment out of the trip. It’s much more exciting to cancel right at the last second before you have to deal with the consequences.

Get the Chase Sapphire Preferred. It has free travel insurance when you book with the card
