My cousin lives there and is full Bernietard. The type of pompous arse who has a Twitter account with random characters as the name/handle, posts there, and then screen shots it and posts that on Facebook in an attempt to give his FB post credibility. 100% ridiculous and doubt we communicate at all after our grandmother dies.

From what I've seen/read/know about Austin, it's basically the standard state capital city island for liberals. You're probably better off living a bit further away and tolerating the commute rather than living there and having to deal with their taxes and policies.

I just moved to Austin in December for work. It is expensive here but I love it so far. It’s hot but not as humid as Louisiana was and there seems to always be a breeze so mosquitoes are not as bad. Housing is expensive though. We have not bought a house yet. Renting a 3300 sf 5 BR house for $3500. House sold in 2019 for $539k. In 2021 the current owner bought it for $890k. He offered to sell it to me for $1.2 M. But no State tax. Property tax will get you if you buy but there is so much to do here it is worth it. We love it.

Which city are your renting in, if you don't mind me asking?

Yes you get used to the heat. That doesn’t mean you go out and do stuff bt noon and 7p during the summer, unless it involves a pool or lake. Most people don’t. It’s a semi-dry heat, not super humid.

If you are allergic to cedar or oak pollen certain times of the year will be tough. February-April. Sometimes the cedars look like they are on fire bc so much pollen is being blown off by the wind.

Keep in mind Austin proper is a lot different than the suburbs. Proper used to be authentic/funky. It’s now fancy and fake. Government is terrible. But many good restaurants.

Suburbs much more Texas normal. Georgetown, cedar park, bee cave, oak hill, Kyle all have positive things, but are typical suburbs. Dripping has character but is pretty far out.

Living in a burb and driving in to take advantage of some of the good things Austin proper can be a nice life. But traffic does suck at busy times.

Thanks for the response! Very helpful!!

I’m in Avery Ranch which is technically an Austin address. Brushy creek park is right down the road and it’s close to Cedar Park as well.

Also OP dont let the haters get you down (people just have transplant fatigue, but it's the same for every Texas city). Austin's still a great city if you pick the right spots. Cost of living skyrocketed but that's because the jobs pay so well here.

I wouldn't trade living in the hill country for anything except maybe the coast.

Some good comments on here. But how old are your kids and what activities are they into, that is a big consideration along with your budget. Many good areas here for sure. My 3rd time to lIve in Austin. Good area overall but pick the area best for the Family.

Moved to austin from BR 4 years ago.

Heat is certainly there but low humidity makes shade work the way it should. Also, almost always a breeze. Anyone who says it’s worse than Louisiana heat is lying.

I bought a home right on the edge of Austin off 290. Essentially Manor. This area is booming and you can be downtown in 30 and to the airport in 20.

Good luck!

Please don't. I was born and raised there...as was my whole family for generations and the influx of people moving there has destroyed it.

Just wish the Cali transplants would learn their lessons. Was down there last week and while sitting at the hotel bar for dinner I had to nearly bite my tongue off. Two marginally attractive at best chicks (OT 5’s) that actually seemed to be trying harder to be unattractive sat down next to me. They struck up a conversation and explained how they moved to Austin from Cali for work. They did most of the talking as all I did was ask the occasional interrogative. They proceeded to tell me that Cali is better than the south because of education, that nobody cares about college sports, that conservatives pushed too far which forces Democrats to stand their ground and that Europe is so much better than the United States. The sum total was they are here for work and moving back to Cali eventually……personally frick them and frick any ignorant transplant like them.

And enjoy the homeless vagrants and trash downtown…..delightful

Also, what is it with Californians and their total unwillingness to just stay in their own state instead going to another one and turning it into California? Californians would have made some fantastic missionaries...
