I have it, was diagnosed at about 7, but that was almost 50 years ago. They didn't know then what they do about it now.
My son has it also, but his was caught early. He still wears glasses but his vision isn't as bad as mine.
As others have said, it affects one eye over the other.

I had to wear the patch as a kid. Also had two eye surgeries, that really improved my vision.
I now where contacts/glasses and have almost 20/20. No chance of LASIK though

I have it. Realized at about 5 or 6 that I couldn't read the words on the page with my left eye...right eye was fine. Tried the eye patch to strengthen my "lazy" left eye as a youngster. 45 years later, left eye is still only good for appearance and peripheral vision. No center vision unless I shut my right eye and force the left eye to work....then it only gives me a blurry view.
Thing is that had the left eye been crossed or out of alignment when I was a baby, it could have been fixed. It was in alignment and thus undetected and my brain just trained itself to ignore the poorer image sent by the left eye. Too late for repair by the time the problem was discovered.

I've had it since I was born. One good thing about it is that I can freak people out by only crossing one eye. I used to drive some of my teachers crazy doing that.

I do... left eye. Should've worn those lazy eye glasses I had when I was a kid.

I was born with severe strabismus requiring multiple surgeries before age 3, and had the final one at 12 years old.
Fortunately I have almost perfect vision now and my eyes are totally straight. No one would ever know I have this disorder unless I tell them. However, the neurological issue will be forever present. When I look through binoculars I can only see one side or the other, not a joined image.
People (children AND adults) can be so cruel and do not understand how devastating this very common childhood issue can be to an individual. I truly empathize with adults I meet who suffer from uncorrected strabismus. I will be forever in debt to my surgeon because his skill changed the course of my social and professional life.
When I clicked on this thread, I knew there would be a-holes posting memes and joking, but they have no idea how common and hurtful this disorder is. I am not surprised at the cruelty but it still disappoints me.
Does your doctor think surgery is an option? It's probably too late at your age to improve the neurological issue, but surgery might help you with the cosmetic issue.
Don't give up hope. Contact Drs. Bradley and Andrew Black on Flanders in Baton Rouge. They are the best pediatric strabismus surgeons in this region and can refer you to someone who treats adults. Dr. B Black performed my surgeries decades ago and I have near PERFECT results. I still see him once a year even though I am 35.
Good luck!
