As amazing as I am in Excel, it just seems funny that I literally have no idea what Access even looks like.

Do I even database, bro?

I worked extensively with it in my last job.
What do you need to know?

I took a class on it years ago but I couldn't tell you a thing about it.

What is this, 2007?

There was a time when we thought that Access would replace Excel....and then Excel expanded row restrictions.

IMO, nearly anything you want to do in Access and be done in Excel, typically in bad-arse pivot tables.

I got stuck with a campus job trying to design a database, so I've been teaching myself from scratch. I have the framework built, I'm just missing one very important concept.

Let's say you have the main database with alumni, and then you have 4/5 other tables for competitive teams that represent the university. How can I automatically transfer the unique alumni ID from the main database to the separate competitive teams tables?

If that isn't clear I can try to make it clearer

That depends on how much data you have

like...you want to copy records from table 1 to table 2...or you want to reference the information in table 1 in table 2?

You mean from excel to access or from one database in access to another one?

I'm fairly fluent in Excel but I sure don't know how I would get it to do the things Access does. Maybe I'm not fluent in Excel

So the main database will have all of the alumni info tied to the unique ID. I then have completely separate tables for the the competitive teams. The only info I would like to go from the main database to the competitive teams is the unique ID and the first name + last name. That way queries will be easy to run.

I have no idea what vlookup is. I'm assuming that's got something to do with a database.

vlookup would allow you to populate data in a table based on associations and values in another. Sounds like what you need but not entirely clear

Vlookups allow you to move data from one place to another using a unique identifier..your Alumni ID in this case.

That's in Excel though, not sure how it works in Access

I could do it in a second in excel if you really need help now

Maybe use a query with a join putting the only the data you want as a join between the two
