Great thoughts and both could very well be possibilities. Can't find anything similar though. Compass and surveying equipment were certainly promising.

Not sure what he is leaning on - looks like a chair is behind him though but looks nothing like the thing he is hanging on.
There is no other markings on the daguerreotype. Two others I bought were marked "Scovill" but not this one.

I don't the gentleman us wearing it. It appears that there is a trunk in front of him that is partially open, and what you are seeing is the latch to the trunk. Google "antique trunk parts" and you'll see similarly shaped items.
