aka water bears, aka Tardigrades.
Tardigrades, also known as water bears, space bears and pudgy wudgies, are microscopic animals capable of withstanding some of the most severe environmental conditions. Researchers from Japan have now created the most accurate picture yet of the tardigrade genome, revealing the neat tricks it uses to stay alive.
Their results show that tardigrades have evolved a unique arsenal of strategies to cope with stressful conditions, including a protein that protects its DNA from radiation damage.
Classified as “extremophiles,” they can survive freezing, total dehydration, radiation, and even the vacuum of space.
Earlier this year, scientists successfully revived a tardigrade that had been frozen solid for more than three decades—a new record for this durable species.

Well this could be useful for humans in energy sector, health care, etc. Very cool.
I wonder if they have been able to replicate this protein in mice or anything with any promising results.

Replicating the protein isn't the problem. It's getting it to work in another animal system.

They're working on this in Japan. Another cool thing about the little creature is that when it's completely dehydrated it turns into glass. Then it is able to be hydrated and springs back to life.

The Japanese will find a way to make it even more weird.

I guess I meant this.
I envision a localized treatment prior to radiation therapy to protect surrounding tissue in patients.
Or a monthly shot to nuclear power plant workers and dosimetrists/RTs.
