as I recall, I had difficulty regaining my number from imessage. I had to go to apple.com, sign in and delete my account or profile or something. Took about a week before all my messages were actualy coming through.

Wrong. I had to reactivate my old iPhone for a week when my S3 died. When I got the new S3, I had messaging issues from iPhone users for a few weeks. I disassociated my number with imessage on the phone, logged out, and deleted that account from the phone. Didn't work. Completely wiped the phone, didn't work. I had to wait out the cycle...

I've just started using google hangouts as my messaging app and like it quite a bit. The only bells and whistles type thing I miss on it is the text pop up box like on gosms or some others.
