AP ran faster each split excluding the first 1/4 mile when he raced to get the lead.

By comparison, secretariat slowed each split excluding the first 1/4 mile; here are the '73 splits:
23.6, 22.6, 23.6, 24.4, 24.8, 25.0.

If AP just ran flat 24's... Guess the final time..... 2:24.
