It's still far and away the best repository of actual user reviews out there. But you do need to pay attention to the sources and exercise some judgment when using them.

Really?

Go look up any product category at amazon and look at top product.

Many times it's a no name product which somehow has 20x the number of reviews as the next one listed

How do you explain that?

So you want to place a bet that I'm wrong and amazon is not going to announce a major overhaul to their review system this year?

What's the bet?

Lots of people trying to save a dime, buying the cheap product, and sharing their experience about it so that others can experience either the joy of saving money responsibly or the horrors of cutting corners, whichever was their experience.

ETA: From experience, the majority of people trying to save a dime are the ones that are willing to give Westinghouse TVs (and other 'off-brands') a try, and they're also way more likely to follow up on reviews. They don't walk into a store and say "that one" and walk out, typically.

Just personal experience. By no means fact or accurate on a larger scale than people I know.

You asked for an explanation. I think it's a conceivable one.

Sure. If you're right, I will quit posting on the soccer board.

ETA: Someone bought this same router for me. I've been satisfied. I went back and got their USB wireless adapter. Been satisfied with it as well.

I don't deny that some vendors try to game the system, but if you see something suspicious then don't rely on it. Products that have been on the market for several years tend to have a lot more reviews than newly-introduced ones. What other retailer even approaches Amazon with the depth of its reviews?

I don't completely disagree with you. But something smells rotten in Denmark and I think this is the to of the iceberg. I bet we're going to have a major story come out this year about the review system at amazon

Like I said you can't even google a product these days without getting 2-3 pages of nothing but amazon reviews in your results.

This is going to be a big story.

bots

so i move on knowing that the product requires phantom reviews to appear appealing
