Is OP in college?

If so, don't delay your degree by going active. Finish the degree then go to OCS.

Life is infinitely better as an officer in the military than as an enlisted.

If OP is NOT in college...why the hell not? It's FREE!!!

Serving your country is never a waste of time. Go volunteer at the local veterans club. Semper Fi from a USAF vet.

And in those designated areas it's also tax free.

Not one bit, you signed your contract, took your Oath and at anytime they could have deployed your unit or a detachment of your unit, the fact that you put your life on the line for our country and trained as though you could be sent next week shows commitment that most will not make. Thank you for your service ...... fellow Soldier....

As long as the Op "Gives credit where credit is due" and doesn't try to act like a hardcore "in the shite" grunt around guys who served in combat zones he will be fine.

Active duty guys do tend to view "reservists" with a little animosity but only when they make a stupid mistake or prove themselves to be worthless. If you are a reservist and know your stuff, then there is little judgement heading your direction.

Does one choose to go the route of being stationed in some random country for a year or so vs just being a reserve that goes to drill once a month?

No, you can choose your job but you can't choose your post.

That is not necessarily true. First off the other guy is referring to the guard or reserve vs active duty. I started out as active duty and really had no say in where I was stationed. I got to fill out a "dream sheet" and I didn't go to anywhere on my dream sheet. Now I am in the guard and only go once a month but I'm apart of one unit and that will never change unless I choose to transfer.

To answer the original question. No you shouldn't feel like your time is wasted. I'm certain you have learned and grown a lot from while you have been in. You have no control over whether or not you get deployed.

You'd better flush out your head, new guy. This isn't about Valor... this is a slaughter. If I'm gonna get my balls blown off for a word, my word is "poontang".

That sucks. I chose my job, duty station, and got a 30k signing bonus when I joined. It was army though.

wouldn't say wasted. but you're not going to have enough points on your sheet to qualify for benefits from the VA if you only did the normal one weekend a month and 2 weeks a year.

i'm sure there are plenty of IA's billets available. you don't have to wait on them to call you up.

If you haven't at least talked to an Officer Selection Officer, then you're doing yourself a disservice

You are doing your part and should not feel like what you do is any less than those before you. We don't make the call on when we go, we just answer it when it comes. I have served 16 years in the Army National Guard and somehow have never deployed, but that call came a few months ago and I will be leaving soon. It sucks that I get it now when I am older and have a family, but that is how it goes. Keep doing what you are doing and stay ready.
