I don't doubt that weed accounts for the majority of illicit drug sales, but I doubt that it actually subsidizes the others. I'm sure the profit margin on heroin or meth is much higher than on weed.

If you made weed legal, which we've all seen isn't the end of the world (the states where it's legal are doing just fine), the guy that sells it to them doesn't also have some meth to offer as well. Not saying that it would solve our drug problems because it's not going away no matter how much money the gov wants to blow on it, but it would cut some of the possibility of the first encounter of harder stuff that a lot of people might have.
