When a 15 year old murders someone the parents should be held accountable as well

Most kids with parents aren’t going out burglarizing homes and murdering people.

Most aren't issued sidearms but even when they are it's usually locked in the unit armory.

I have no information other than the OP but my guess is that he confronted a vehicle burglar or just happened to surprise one.

I've confronted two different prowlers in my yard at night in the past few yards. This thread definitely has me rethinking those decisions.

I'd take a stab that most 30 yr old military members probably own a firearm. I'm guessing that he just accidentally stumbled on the vehicle burglary or just went out to scare them off.

Not an issued side arm. That is a huge no-no if you bring a military issued firearm home.

Probably. I was just answering his specific question about taking side arms home.

Several years ago I pulled a gun on a kid (16-17) breaking into my shed about 3am. I'm pretty sure that he pissed himself. I wasn't going to shoot him unless he charged me or something like that. Probably wasn't the smartest idea.

I’d rather be judged by twelve than carried by six.

You never know what somebody is capable of or what they’re going to do in those situations. It’s best to take every precaution necessary to protect yourself, your home, and your family. Even if that means pulling a gun on somebody and using it.

I worked with a guy who shot and wounded an intruder in his home. He lived with a fear for a long time that the guy or one of his family members/gang buddies were going to come back and harm him, his wife or kids.
He ended up taking a transfer to another state as the stress was too much for him & his wife.

I agree but I hadn't considered look outs, or multiple other people. Just things for me to consider if it happens again.

I definitely didn't want to shoot him, just scare him off, and I didn't know it was a teenager at first. I actually let him go and told him that I'd call the police if I saw him around again. He was shaking like a leaf.

I'd probably have to think that I was about to die to actually shoot someone.

Yeah, I’d say one of the first things you should do is to try and get around em and get the jump on em if, God forbid, you ever have to find yourself in that situation.

You cannot use lethal force in the defense of property.

Unless they are in your home and you are there.

They are attempting to enter your car while you are there.

If you shoot someone burglarizing your home or car you are likely going to jail yourself.

I would only have shot them if they reacted violently to being confronted.

I'd probably just turn all the lights and see if they run now. Honestly, at 40 years old the last thing I'd ever want is to have to confront some criminal in the middle of the night if I could avoid it.

The last guy was staring in at us from my back patio door at 1 am so I kind of lost my shite.

True, age does breed wisdom. At 24 I feel like I’d go out guns blazing like Josey Wales and get holes all in my chest.

That’s a scary situation no doubt. Especially because you don’t know what the other person is going to do.

If you pull a gun on someone in your shed at 3am and they charge you I think you'd be good. That's a legitimate case of being fearful for your own wellbeing. I wasn't just going to shoot the guy unless it was the only option. I sure as hell wasn't going out there unarmed either.

Hopefully you scared him straight. Looking down the barrel of a loaded gun pointed at you is something you don't forget easily. I'm glad it didn't go further than that.
The guy I worked with told me there wasn't time to think out the situation. The intruder took a step toward him with a raised hand and he took him down with one shot. There was an investigation and no charges were filed against him.
