I'd recommend a self rinsing-foaming coil cleaner (comes in an aerosol can) for the EVAP coil every year or so and a quick shop-vaccing of the condensate drain line also.
Regular washing of the condenser,as already mentioned, is huge.

When I had my central air/heat replaced a few years ago I put the new unit under a maintenance agreement where the company cleans the blower unit in the attic and the outside unit every six months. It takes the guy about two hours each time.
