Advice about joining the Army Reserve at 30.

OT, advise me about joining the Army Reserve at 30 years old wih no prior service, an MA and a law degree. What would I be able to expect with this?
Currently finishing law school, BIGLAW not achieved. Always wanted to serve in the military, and as I'm getting older I feel the door closing on the opportunity to do it. So I have been thinking about joining the Army Reserve and then also hanging a shingle and doing the small town lawyer thing as well. Is this a feasible plan? What can I expect to get from the Army Reserve with my education?

Why not just join the Regular Army?
The average age of a JAG Corps captain is 30; it's much harder to get into than the Reserve, but a completely different lifestyle. The JAG Corps reserve is best AFTER you've done your time on active duty. You'll never really fit in otherwise.
This is assuming you would opt to use your degree and become a Judge Advocate; you'd be a fool otherwise (unless you want to enlist, or be a 30 year old 2LT; I don't know which is worse
)

I might try that, but it's gotten to where if you're not top quarter you can't get the JAG spots I hear.

Here's what you do:
Join the Reserve, get commissioned, and go to the JAG Officer course. Then volunteer to deploy or at least do a year on active duty (go overseas, it looks better). If you like it, it will be easier to transition to the Regular Army if your application isn't that strong out of law school.

My friend recently did JAG at 34. Had to have a dr sign off since he missed the cut off. He went away for 3 months for training and now does 1 weekend a month training.
Pretty sure he found out he will be deployed for 10 months next year.

If I were you I'd do a year or two in reserves, volunteer for a deployment then put a packet in for active duty.
Do you really want to practice law or even command a jag at an installation
Or do you want to go through OCS and do something else? And lead a platoon then a company later on? This route isn't direct commission so you'll do basic training first, then OCS, then an order of merit list for your branch.

Do you smoke? The only tough part will be basic training Can i suggest the Air Guard?

If you're going to do it go active. Unless you have a great job that they're cool with you doing this and this is a lifelong goal then by all means do the reserves. You will regret it though honestly it's a waste of time.
I was a recruiter for the Marines and spent 10 years in if you have enlistment questions though. Best of luck
