the relay. It gets a 24v ac signal from your thermostat when it has voltage it then closes and allows your two legs of 120 v to go to the compressor and fan.
They get hot and like all relays are a weak point and can fail. They are usually like $10. Harder to change than a capacitor, but at east it can't shock you when the power is off like a capacitor.
We are starting to get crazy ants here and crazy ants LOVE contactors and nest in them since they are always warm. They short them out and they fail. The contacts also burn out over time.
