Anyone with a suggestion on where to get a capacitor for my outside unit today? I'm in Mandeville. And it's hot already.

You've now learned your lesson to have a backup on hand for this.

Godspeed.

Take the old one with you to Home Depot. You may get lucky. If not ask them to suggest a place.

After you take it off, put a screwdriver across the connections at the the same time. You want to discharge any stored electricity that way instead of getting a nice shock to yourself.

Those thing’s purpose is to store electricity to give the compressor as startup jolt and they will store a charge even if they have partially failed.

I've replace them before but went to an appliance parts house. Didn't think Home Depot or Lowes carried them. heading there now to see. Thanks.

If they don’t have the exact one, close enough should work.

yep. I ordered my spares on Amazon a few years back. I implore everyone to do the same.
These capacitors always go out on weekends and when it's 90 degrees. The only thing the OP missed was that it wasn't July 4th.

Must be a better class of employees at HD where you live. In my area you'd be hard pressed to find an employee who even knows where to find stuff in their department, much less offer a suggestion to find things at another store.

Total bullshite. It's used on alternating current, dude.

If you can't find one buy a cheap window unit, slide it in a bedroom window, and at least have one room cool for the day.

OMG dude. Capacitors store electricity even when removed from their power source. It’s what they do.

Sorry if you were dropped on your head one too many times as a child.

So neither Home Depot or Lowe's had one. The guy at Lowe's actually offered to sell me a pull-out disconnect instead. I passed on that.

Pulled out of Lowe's, there's an ACE hardware just up the street open for 4 hours on Sunday. Ask the guy at the counter, he shrugs his shoulders. Old guy sitting in a chair says "yes, glass case in back". There was one with the specs I needed.

Got home, put it in. AC is blowing cold air again.

and I've already ordered 2 backups from Amazon.

I've often thanked God that I came up with no money and a strong mechanical aptitude.

If you grew up with money you could have paid someone to fix it for you

I don't value that. I value a person being able to fix things when they break at inopportune times. Especially when it took me a total of 1 1/2 hours including a trip to HD/Lowes/Ace and $26.00 for the part on a Sunday.

Why did you order from Amazon and not from the local guy who stocked what you needed?
