Graves B. Erskine, commander of 3d Marine Division at Iwo Jima, was from Sikes, La.
Trivia: Iwo Jima was not a complete Marine show. The 147th Infantry Regiment, Ohio National Guard, was attached and had some of the toughest sledding.

My dad was a Marine based in Iwo Jima in the 50's.

My great uncle died on Iwo Jima (pictured on left). Was just doing research on him last night. Strange.
