...although, there also was a rumor that the failure rate was "adjustable" based on fleet needs.
Punishment also changed as a function of time. For my class;
Underage drinking A-School: Kicked out of program
Underage drinking in Power School: 30 days CCU and busted back to E-3
Underage drinking in Prototype: Did you get laid? High-5

Kicked out of program
Greatest thing that I ever did during my navy career.

I think my class was just unusually dumb.
We lost about 25% in A School (EM), another 10% in power school and NPTU.
By the time I finished my 6 years, probably only 50% of the guys I joined with were still nukes.
We also spent a year and a half in shipyard and didn't have a single guy re-enlist, while simultaneously losing 20 guys off the sub due to psyching out. It was brutal

Yeah I'd say about 50% made it through their enlistment as nukes for me as well. Also can only think of one that re-enlisted, although every ET did.
Regarding the post above for punishment, it was selective in Charleston. I got a DUI on base and just was limited liberty, couldn't leave base for a month or something. Others got arrested for underage drinking and DUIs after me and got kicked out of the program. Had a couple buddies get kicked out for shite they had done prior to joining and another guy failed a piss test and was kicked out of the navy.
On the ship we had four of my good buddies, all nukes, die in a car crash one night. Was a rough blow.
So factoring in all of that, yeah probably 50%

Well
When you’re overworked, undermanned, lack of hot ladies, what is to be expected?
