What unit were you in?
I was removed from my unit and detached to work at the State headquarters - consider me "middle management" for all relevant times during the Katrina recovery. I directly led no troops. I made no policy. I made no critical risk acceptance decisions. I exercised, except in very limited circumstances, only general military authority as an officer.

Were the rumors of widespread rape true?
Nothing credible. Obviously, I believe that crimes occurred in the Dome and those crimes probably included rape. Again, city 25k to 35k under highly stressful conditions. We had limited personnel and resources at the Dome until Thursday when the overall situation started to look much better. Really from Tuesday evening until Thursday morning was the critical period at the Dome - closest we came to losing that particular battle.

What are your questions?
Was the Superdome as bad as we heard? Rapes, violence etc.?

Do you remember the make-shift latrine built out of MRE boxes?

There were no credible reports of "widespread", out of control behavior. Again, certainly there was criminal activity - a city of roughly 30k or more folks came into being overnight.

I don't have a clear memory of the "structure". I know we had it off some stairwells and the "catch and release" buckets had some modesty protection. Were those MRE boxes?

Are you drinking a hurricane tonight?
If not, why not?

How many heinies did you loot?

I don’t have a question at this point. Just a simple
“Thank you for your service to our country “

No question, but you should be clearer in your OP.
Ive read through this thread and I still can’t put together why you were in the 9th ward to begin with.

None. There was looting by National Guard troops, but that was later, November or December.

Where did you ride out the actual storm? What was that like?

Southwest corner just before you got to the parking garage.
This thread brings back a lot of memories!
- Representative Jefferson asking for a 2-1/2T to get to his house (we didn't have any).
- Busses finally showing up to take the ninth ward out and then had to turn around up on the Interstate when they realized they didn't have enough. Ninth Ward got pissed and started throwing water bottles at us.
- Few of us were actually armed (legally).
- Sleeping under the busiest heliport in the World for several days.
- Finding kegs tapped in the seats of the Superdome.
- Making up numbers to report to the Pentagon because nobody was thinking about counting people getting on the busses.
- Oprah Winfrey apparently walked by me while I was sleeping in the parking garage.
- Beer for the upcoming Saints game was "relocated" to Carville for a future NCO Conference.
- LTG Honore sitting around looking at his Blackberry only to get up when reporters came around for a sound bite.
- Gunshots at night coming from the City. If you ever wanted to kill someone and get away with it, that was your chance.
- You could see the stars at night like you were up in the mountains.
- Being the only person in the Super Dome at 2:00 am (after everyone was evacuated) and NOT wanting to walk out to the field because it was soaked in piss.

Which branch of the military were you in or which first responder team were you a part of?

Recommend Jean Lafitte’s Blacksmith shoppe 1st. Toast the sky and those who are no longer with us b/c of that fateful event.

I have some camcorder videos that I need to covert to digital and I’ll show you some real life amateur footage from the day after the water went down and we were able to get into the city and even some footage from Johnny Whites. This footage was taken on or around Sept 13th
Anyone know where I can send these tapes to be converted to digital?

we had to take airline down to the westbank expressway with a convoy of vacuum trucks and then go the wrong way on the CCC down to okeefe to get in. This was mid September. 4’ of water all over the CBD and groups of people wandering/wading like zombies. Got to the Hyatt (where I used to work) and met with FEMA engineers and they told us to go find dry ground uptown and wait for instructions LOL. Nextel direct connect was the only thing that worked.
Almost a week spent on the neutral ground until we finally got a plan together to start on the catch basins. I’ll never forget that week…it was fricking eerie.
And yes we were all armed, only once or twice did we have to bow up but had there been a bullet exchange nobody would have known
