In the context of the late 70s, mid 80s, he wasn’t completely wrong. Just saying that view point, and it was steadily broadcast back then, is why people pile on. I wasn’t in the oil bidness but made quite a few bucks after that bust by buying foreclosed properties, renovating them, and sitting on them until the economy came back a little. So, in a sense it trickled down to me too.

yes, I believe that's correct.

So yearly tuition for 2 would come out to ~$1125/month averaged out, give or take depending where they go.

Seems like Capt. Seal would've financed a way to have some professional off-shore baws recovering his floating cargo, rather than relying on Boudreaux and Thibodaux splashing around Elmer's Island, wetting his shite all up.

With respect to your dad, that kind of over inflated view of self importance (oilfield,) is why people do sort of pile on when the oil patch is hurting.

Friend of mine has been a Orthodonist in Lafayette since 1982, and has worked closley with a plastic surgery group most of that time. He recently said they could make a line graph of thier income per year then lay a graph of the price of oil on top of it, and it would be a perfect match.

Best gift I ever saw sent to someone was a Nintendo, Fifth of Crown and a set of handcuffs. Not sure what it was all about and did not ask any questions.

Yep. One of my Dad's favorite sayings is that everyone in South LA, from the burger flippers at McDonalds to the Surgeons at Lourdes, works for the oil field.

May not be as true today, but it isn't far off.

Definitely not as true today, O&G has been in the crapper for years now only compounded by COVID and they’re still building neighborhoods like there’s no tomorrow, and as soon as a house is finished there’s a truck in the driveway. I have no idea how the local economy continues to chug along, but something has definitely changed.

That’s due to low interest rates and 84 month truck notes

Where are all of these people working? Or are they just moving around within the metro area and hollowing out older neighborhoods?

Speaking from my own perspective, I'm still in the oilfield, but almost all of our clients are either in West Texas, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, or international. We do *some* work for the Gulf, but very little.

No, lots of new construction still going up and getting bought. It's slowed lately due to the increase in lumber prices, but from what I hear spec homes don't last long right now, so I expect building to pick up soon.

Probably the correct answer, my wife’s cousin is about to move the family to Pennsylvania, he’s doing hitch work now, but they’re after him to be in the office local. I’m betting a lot of these guys are doing hitch work around the country, it’s the new offshore.

Regarding what a 100k income can afford you, realistically.....early 80s, 90s, or today.....how many families only had just one vehicle. You had at least two, and with a teenager driving, that’s three. Even if none of these are bling/status cars, that’s still 2 car notes (paid cash for cheap teenager car) and 3 car insurances. That cuts into the wiggle room.

Fatima and STM tuition is about $800 per month on a 10 month payment plan, which ends at the end of the school year. So no tuition in the summer, which gives you vacation money. These schools offer a 10% discount if you pay the whole tuition bill up front.

Kids are expensive, but worth it.

Your dad wasn't far off at all. In fact, he was pretty spot on for the South Louisiana region as a whole. Go ask Fezzo's in Crowley or Regatta in Lake Arthur how their business was in say...2008 vs. 2015.

West Texas and New Mexico, in the Permian Basin. NM is actually fantastic acreage, but now the current administration is starting to pile on federal regulations, which Fed minerals & surface make up probably 35-45% of the best NM acreage.

Wyoming could be next best after Permian, but again, lots of Fed Lands due to being a Western state.

Some of the largest oilfield service companies situated on U.S. 90 between Broussard and Morgan City may still be headquartered there on 90, but their busiest yards are now in the Permian.

Still the same.

PetroQuest is probably 1/10 of what it was in 2010. They took up an entire floor. Plains Exploration is done and bought out (at least mostly). The large insurance company that took up at least half of one floor moved out.
