170 Years Ago Today: U.S. Declares War on Mexico

Fighting had already been going on some time, but on May 13, 1846 Congress makes it official and declares war on Mexico.
This war is where a large number of the men would hold command positions for both the Confederacy and the Union in the Civil War first saw combat. For the Confederate, commanders such as Lee, Longstreet, Jackson and even President Jefferson Davis all fought in Mexico. Likewise, future Union commanders like Grant, McClellan, Mead, and Bursides also served as well.
The war saw the question of Texas settled once and for all along with giving the US New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

So in reality, we actually lost.

"What this economy needs is another war. Nothing big -- maybe we could hit Mexico again. After lunch, when they're having their siestas under them big hats."

James K Polk was a hell of a president.

Antonio López de Santa Anna
Once the U.S. declared war on Mexico, Antonio López de Santa Anna wrote to the Mexican government, saying he no longer had aspirations to the presidency, but would eagerly use his military experience to fight off the foreign invasion of Mexico as he had before. President Valentín Gómez Farías, a civilian, was desperate enough to accept the offer and allowed Santa Anna to return. Meanwhile, Santa Anna had secretly been dealing with representatives of the U.S., pledging that if he were allowed back in Mexico through the U.S. naval blockades he would work to sell all contested territory to the United States at a reasonable price.[61] Once back in Mexico at the head of an army, Santa Anna reneged on both agreements. He declared himself president once again and unsuccessfully tried to fight off the U.S. invasion.
Not too revered here in Texico as you can imagine.

Polk had great foresight to put his main fort in Louisiana to secure the frontier.

Someone should let the Meximelts know they lost and to stop claiming that this land is there's. Although I'd be ok giving them Cali back..

General Winfield Scott is the greatest American general you have never heard of. He marched an army of 12,000 men, outnumbered, and cut off from its base of supplies, the 250 miles from Vera Cruz to Mexico City. While on the march he fought and won five major battles. In each of them he was outnumbered and in several of them the Mexican Army held the high ground.

Louisiana was a good choice as a state, but it is hard to do much worse than the Leesville area...
ETA: Never mind, I'm an idiot. I assumed Fort Polk was named for President Polk.

I think he was concerned about the Spanish Fort in Natchadoches or Natchitoches. I forget. Maybe both.

James K Polk was a hell of a president.
He provoked Mexico into a war with the United States for the expressed purpose of expanding slavery into the southwest and California. His actions helped lead to the deaths of 600,000-750,000 Americans 15 years later.
