2011 was def all time worst year for Tornados.

And April of that year, even without the Super Outbreak, was extraordinary.

As bad as Tuscaloosa was, Hackleburg and Phil Campbell got it worse. Killed 7 people in an underground shelter. That’s strong.

That was the deadliest single tornado of the 2011 Super Outbreak. Killed 72 people.

Another place I always think about is Cordova, AL, which is in Walker County northwest of Birmingham. Cordova got absolutely wrecked by the early morning round of storms. Then that afternoon, an EF-4 comes right through town. Horrific.

This is a really good breakdown/case study of the outbreak.

I was working in Birmingham that day, up from the gulf coast.
Everyone started leaving work at noon. It was a beautiful day.
The next five hours were surreal.

The Hackleburg/Phil Campbell/Tanner tornado did that to multiple in-ground storm shelters to varying degrees. I believe the one with the fatalities was poorly constructed, but would have likely been okay for a weaker tornado.

Rainsville, AL is often overlooked or forgotten from that day, maybe due to it being later in the evening and less coverage due to power outages and recovery already being underway with the other storms. Some people call it the "Forgotten EF5".
