quote:

it seems like we are hesitant to really stretch and throw down the field. We seem to be throwing more and more short screen passes and passes to the half backs in the flats.

Opposing defenses are sagging back and not allowing the deep passes. If the deep ball was there, Drew would hit it. The offense and Drew haven't changed its philosophy in one year. The lack of a running game has hurt. Ivory has run well at times, but I don't think teams worry too much about our backs. Plus, Ivory is young and the other guys are new. I doubt Payton has as much trust in them as he does in PT and Bush. I think the O will be better once they get healthy again. Love him or hate him, Reggie is a matchup nightmare for opposing teams

I said this in week 3 its the HUMAN ELEMENT. Sure they want to focus and play as hard as they did last year but.......................They've been to the top of the Mt. they've been praised as gods, the hookers do them for free as long as they pose for a pic.Its not a suprise to me this is happening. What I hope is that the Cleveland loss was such an embarrasment that the pride we know they have reappears and we somehow make the playoffs and anything can happen then...............

They are struggling on offense due to having both Bush and Thomas out simultaneously. That takes away the dump off option to the rb on pass plays. Without that option, the opposing defenses are able to blitz more, and Brees does not perform well under heat. Once they get either one of the rwo rbs back, offense should improve.
Also, Shockey just appears to be going through the motions this season. His routes are not crisp, and he is whiffing on blocks. This could be the unidentified person that Brees was referring to in the post game comments about player having to watch film and take criticism.

Honest evaluation is people are overreacting about the first 7 games. The offense took a step back when we lost Reginald and then again when we lost Pierre... When we get Reggie back it will open things up a little more and that little spying fricktard that people have been putting smack dab in the middle won't be there... The defense is stout and will only get better as Sharper molds in.

I expect a bunch of people to either shut up or hop back on the Saints wagon after Sundays game.

Saints always play pretty well in PrimeTime.

I'm not worried at all, our 3 losses were on the offense, which is the best offense in the NFL... When they finally get clicking, which they will, this team ignites.

Worried about Pitt. until we know whether Bush will play. If he's out, I do not think we can win.
And, WTF with Thomas? Man, it is starting to look like he'll be in a different uniform next season. Find it hard to believe he's goldbricking, but he is somewhat injury prone.

My evaluation is

The Superbowl hangover is real.
Injuries Injuries Injuries
I picked the saints 10-6 prior to start of the season and am sticking with that.

Its too soon to say but if the Saints cant get all their starters on the field for at least 3 or 4 weeks prior to playoffs ....then they have very little hope of repeating if any hope at all.

Team chemistry, not as hungry as last year

With success some people get rock star syndrome. I'm not saying this is the reason, but they look very lethargic this year. Last year it was obvious all the players were on board giving 100% for the same goal. I don't see that at all this year.

I'm also getting sick and tired of hearing "everyone is giving us their best shot because we're the super bowl champs" excuse. If we give teams our best shot then it shouldn't be a problem.

yeah, i'm not, 1000% Bush is the key to our team!! but i do think he is a nice piece to the puzzle. having him back will help. and i have noticed Shockey has been slackin a little. but i think our main problem is lack of concentration, not just by Brees, but by a few guys. trying to push too hard and make things happen to make up for the injuries, has plagued us this year.

Honestly its the injuries and the fact we are getting every teams best effort as SB champs. Add it all up and it comes out to 4-3

1. Mental-mental-mental-mental-mental.
2. ZERO special teams preparation.
3. Lack of concentration
4. No adrenalin.

How else do you explain:

One week - kicking the everloving crap out of a current 4-2 team on the road in their own intimidating stadium (should have shut them out) WITHOUT Bush, Thomas, Sharper, Greer, etc.

Then the next week, just 7 days later -
Play maybe the worst game in Saints history since the 62-7 loss to Atlanta in 1973?

Why did not ONE person on the Saints sideline see the Brown all by himself on one side of the field on that kickoff return?

Why was not ONE Saint at least in the middle of the field on the fake punt?

Why was there no urgency to stop the 7 minute Browns' drive in the fourth quarter? They surely weren't going to PASS.

How does an OL grab the facemask of a DL on the same play that we just so happen to score a TD?

I'm putting it on the O-line and the receivers.

The line's pass blocking is suspect right now which has to accelerate the clock in Drew's head. Stinchy looks worst of the bunch.

Nicks and Evans seem to be down a little as well. Especially on the screens.

The receivers aren't getting anywhere near the separation we're used to seeing. I can't imagine all of them going lazy at once so I've got to assume that defenses are catching up to Payton's scheme.

This is one of the sanest threads that has floated. There's plenty of opinions I might take some issue with but it devoid of the deep rant that overtakes this place on gamedays.

my 2 cents:

+ Defense has been better than I expected. Factor rotating LBs and the top 3 corners injured (again) and the performance is pretty amazing. Turnovers have a high luck of the bounce factor. The pendulum has swung the other way on that but could go to the plus side just as easy.

- Special Teams: Hopefully the Hartley funk is gone and we are set with Morestead & him for 10 yrs. Roby is studly all around but hasn't broken anything. I wonder if that is cuz of the same guys that have been erratic at best in coverage? Punt return threat nil without Reggie

- The key issue is the NFL's premier offense performing middle of the pack like. Why?...

- We've had success with Reggie & PT out but I can't recall them both out at the same time for so long. Then lose they guys you had as #3 & #4 for the season. That's big. We're lucky Ivory is leading all rookies in rushing and Betts has any gas left at all.

- For Brees I count 1)more pressure, 2)better D schemes, 3)compounded by less run threat, 4)knee might have been bigger issue than revealed, 5)pressing too much to take up the slack

- The offensive line has been my biggest disappointment and culprit of woes. Goodwin has been okay before groin ding last week. Bushrod looks improved too. Evans has scared me looking like take the money and run fatass Grant. He has gone from threatening Hutchinson as the best G in the league to perhaps the most penalized with a ton of whiffs. Nicks looks like why Payton booted him from the starting job for a day in preseason. Stinchcomb looks like the 2nd Rd bust I thought he was the first 3-4 years of his career.

It is nice to see sane threads every once in a while. I think it's obviously Off. issues. And that is caused by our lack of a run game and I think S.P.'s quick trigger on giving up on it in a game to quickly. In the Browns game, during one series the Browns used ZERO D-lineman 4lb's and 7 DB's I think. That begs to be run on. Also out of 77 plays we only used a two back set I think 11 times. No power running game and you will have trouble throwing the ball. Also, did Dev get benched. I don't know how many snaps he got?

Nice av Blu.

Reminds me of...
