quote:
Who Dey is the name of a chant of support by fans of the Cincinnati Bengals, an American football team, in use for over 25 years. The entire chant is: "Who dey! Who dey! Who dey think gonna beat dem Bengals?" The answer screamed in unison, "NOBODY!". Sometimes fans will instead shout "Who Dey" to represent the entire cheer. "Who Dey" is also the name of the team’s mascot, a Bengal tiger.
Who Dey?
In professional football, it looks like the Bengals started chanted thier "Who Dey?" before you Saints fans started chanted your "Who Dat?"
quote:
Then in the late 70's fans at Louisiana State University picked up on it. In 1983, New Orleans Saints fans adopted it during the tenure of coach Bum Phillips. In 1981, the Cincinnati Bengals fans and players started with the now famous "Who Dey" cheer. It was also adopted by wrestling fans of the Junkyard Dog, who wrestled locally in the Mid South Wrestling area in the early to mid 1980s.
Who Dat?

i moved here from cincinnati and was very confused why there were so many bengals fans in louisiana the first time i heard the 'who dat' chant.

I think the Bengals should just stop doing it and I'd also like to hear some proof that the Bengals started it first, because last year was the first time I heard those idiots say it. Plus, ours is WAY better.

Damn, I just looked it up, and both teams adopted it so close to one another that no one can know for sure who started it first. I'll just consider it a tie and say that both teams have a right to use their version without insult from the other.

but Who Dat in new orleans predates the Saints, and certainly predates Who Dey (DUMB).

Who Dey? Really.........
Come on I don't care when the Bengals started that BS of a chant.........
Who Dat has been said by Cajuns since they got off the boats from Biloxi to Pecan Island.

This always pisses me off. The Who Dat started at Alcorn St. went to LSU then the Saints. Then the Bengals.
Maybe it was the Saints then LSU, but I've always heard it started at Alcorn.

That's complete garbage. It's been used by Saints fans for a lot longer than 1983. Mid 1970s easily.

exactly--first off why would some one from ohio talk like that? i lived in ohio for a bit and i never heard that in regular talk.. cajuns talk like that all the time--thats why its translated to football---so why the frick would an ohio person say who dey and "dem" ???so regardless who started it in football, we've been syaing it for longer--much longer--and also leads me to believe they stole it from someone else. either way its lame for them to do it
