For sure. I think he had two batted passes, a sack fumble, and a hit that led to an incompletion.

I can't say that. So you've seen the sleepover episode? It's probably my favorite.

Our entire secondary looks worse than they are. When you have at least 6 seconds to throw on EVERY pass play, your secondary is going to look horrible. Even if you had a superstar secondary...sorry.

Our priority needs to be front four before anything else. Once we can consistently generate a pass rush, then we work pass that. Until then, everyone in the secondary will look horrible and we won't know what we really have until then.

I don't agree with that.

But if you think he is a bum and one of the worst strong safeties in the NFL... well, I don't think you know much about the NFL

I don't know if I see a SS in the NFL torched in coverage as regularly as Harper.

I dont think his run game and tackles make up for that at his position.

You need to watch more NFL

Again, I've advocated the potential cutting of Harper next year but more based on his salary related to his performance, not simply his performance.

If you are gonna throw out "he's among the worst" please give us some data, reviews, and some type of comparative study to show this.

HERE is some bleacher report guy ranking the top 32 strong safeties. He has Harper at #10 (sounds about right to me).

His Harper take-

Agility 7
A good, but not great athlete. Would score higher with better quickness and more fluid movements in space.
Run Defense 10
A lock-down tackler who lives around the football. Has the speed and instincts to quickly attack the ball.
Blitz 10
It's impressive just how good Harper is at getting to the quarterback. Among the best in the game at coming off the edge to disrupt the backfield.
Range 6
Does everything you’d want at the position, but his success rate of making plays on the ball could be higher. Is more likely to get there in time for the tackle, not the interception.
Coverage 6
Does a fair job attacking the ball and limiting completions, but can be sought out by quarterbacks who aren’t afraid to challenge him.
Tackle 7
Will duck his head too often, but is otherwise solid in the open field. Can be a good chase tackler.
Ball Skills 3
Gambles too often, resulting not only in completions, but often in big yardage after the catch.
Speed 6
Above average speed, but this is not an area of strength. Can be outrun to the corner and will struggle with his range due to a lack of speed.
Completion Percentage 9
Just shy of the elite category. Does a very nice job in coverage, better than expected even. Can be a factor at knocking down passes, intercepting the ball, and even limiting the chances a quarterback will take.
Health 10 Good to go.
Overall 74
An elite safety when asked to stop the run and blitz, Harper isn't much help in coverage. The Saints need a hard hitter in the box, and that's what Harper does best. He could improve his range and awareness in 2012.

How bout a few SS's that you might recognize with worse ratings in coverage in that?
Antrel Rolle, New York Giants- Close to being a bottom-barrel player in coverage. Rolle has to work on awareness and reaction time. Rolle is well known, but his actual play on the field doesn't back up his reputation. The Giants could look for a better strong safety who is more of a factor in coverage
Dawan Landry, Jacksonville Jaguars- Allows a fair amount of completions, but can be a good player in coverage. Much better sitting back in a zone than being asked to lock up one on one. Quarterbacks may actually look for Landry in coverage and throw at his man. Did a poor job getting between the ball and the receiver.
Laron Landry, New York Jets- Allows a fair amount of completions, but can be a good player in coverage. Much better sitting back in a zone than being asked to lock up one on one. Near the bottom in terms of completion percentage allowed. Has to be more aware and do a better job getting in position. Ideally, an in-the-box safety.
Charles Godfrey, Carolina Panthers- Can be picked on by good quarterbacks. Is easy to look off and get running away from the target.

wow, I hate BR but had to put something up for those who just throw shite against the wall. So I found THIS.

Pat Kirwan is one of the more respected writers out there. He ranks all safeties and puts Harper at #8.

8. Roman Harper, Saints: An underrated strong safety who averages 75 tackles per season and will deliver 3-4 sacks as well. He also forced six fumbles last year, another indicator he's always around the ball.

Names below him you'll easily recognize include LaRon Landry, Dawan Landry, Ryan Clark, Michael Griffin, Adrian Wilson, etc

I think Harper is better than Griffin and LaRon.

He's probably a better run supporter than Dawan, but not as good in pass coverage.

I think Ryan Clark is better, even though Clark is older.

Not really sure on Wilson. I haven't seen him play in a few years, but he was better than Harper a few years ago. Not sure about now.

certainly plenty of debate to be had. Think it's the first time I ever used anything from BR The main point is that he is far from being a bum that needs to be run out of town. And as ya said, who better are ya gonna put in?

If anyone is looking ahead Vacarro TX & Shawn Williams GA are prolly the top of the SS class so far. Vacarro might be the only 2nd Rder. The cursory LSU nod... Craig Loston currently grading 4th Rd at highest.

I really think that once all our LBs are healthy that we dont need help in that area anymore. I think we need to go all D-line. Its the most important part of Spags D. Just my opinion.
