what was the flag for at the end of the first quarter?

we downed the punt and the ref threw the flag, but picked it up because he said the quarter ended.

I asked that same question, I am not sure why the end of the quarter can nullify a flag.

i think he was gonna flag whoever downed the football for going out of bounds and being the first person to touch the football could be wrong though

they said it fell out of his pocket. those damn refs probably got a spring on those flags what with how they love to launch them....i mean all nfl games.

I actually wondered the same thing. My guess at the time was that the first player to down the ball went out of bounds at some point making him ineligible to touch it first.

I think the reason it was picked up was because the clock ran out on the 1st qtr before he touched the ball, so there was no penalty for illegal touching.
