Someone please correct me if I'm wrong as some of our LBs have changed positions from the 3 LB positions in the last year. I believe Werner and Kwon are the same prototype WLB and neither are suited to play SLB, iirc, that's the position Baun plays well. I may be way off on that. Werner and Kwon are both athletic and have coverage ability but may not be as good at taking on blockers and stopping the run which Baun is better suited for. Obviously Davis plays the middle but he's played Will before.

It's a good problem to have

It is actually Kaden Ellis playing SLB over Baun on most of the 3 LB snaps and Ellis is playing well. Our LBs depth and talent is what I've been waiting to see for 25 yrs.

Damn, I knew there was a name I was missing. Good catch, Ellis has been playing well.

Obviously you aren’t watching Werner. He is a tackling machine that seems to always be were he is suppose to be. If a back is hitting his gap he gets tackled. The dude was a great pick by our staff.

Well of course I'm watching Werner and agree he is a tackling machine. There's a difference between someone who can run all over the field like Werner/Kwon untouched and someone who can take on blocks from Oline or fullback and try and make a tackle, or leave it open for someone else to make a tackle. Baun and I was reminded earlier Ellis iirc are the SLBs who typically do that.

My point was in a traditional defense it may not be often Kwon and Werner are on the field at the same time as they both fit that traditional wlb role. I don't know if either, especially Werner, are one's that can constantly take on blocks, they are better playing wlb and many times being free of blockers, or at least more so than a slb.

I thought Werner took on the blocks appropriately. We shall see tomorrow the game plan tomorrow.

If I'm wrong than that's ok I watched him a lot and he was free to make the tackle, that's why he plays the wlb. I think ya'll are taking my post wrong, I didn't say he never ever ever takes on blocks, just not as often as a slb.

I think Kwon should play special teams or retire, just my opinion.

I watched a guy looking at his tape from this year. Showed he took on THREE blockers at the same time to make the tackle on one play.

I don’t not believe you and that’s really good. Is there a link to see this?

That was good film and a great play on the one you are speaking of. To be fair he did all that in the open field on a screen play. Of those 3, 1 didn’t go after him, 2nd player Werner fooled, and last Werner did do a good job of coming off the block. My take is Werner isn’t the type to take on blocks at los every play. He’s more of a coverage LB. Even watching that film watch him compared to the slb or even mlb, they always have a hat on them early on and typically Werner was free. Of course in 6 man fronts there will be a hat on him quickly also.

I’m in no way bashing Werner. I also don’t think Kamara can be a Jerome Bettis type RB, or CGJ can be a boundary CB full time, it’s just not how they are built or their style of play, they are still great players. Saying that, like Craig Robertson, he may eventually learn or be forced to play all 3 LB positions.

David Hawthorne was one that typically played wlb and got forced into playing iirc slb a lot but even some mlb and never had success like he did in Seattle playing wlb

I'll take Werner now over Robertson or Hawthorne anytime and I couldn't be happier that he is on the field to learn from Davis. Those two were role players, I believe Werner will be more than that

Looked up pff grades and Davis &Werner are tied at 81.1 along with a bunch of other LB’s. That’s disgraceful to Davis, but fair for Werner.
