The NFL reminds me of a box of assorted crackers.

It is called HIRING THE BEST CANDIDATE...no matter race. You want teams to hire non white guys just because it is good for PR? This is not Kapernicks world...this is real life!

Multiple possibilities:

1- Candidate does not interview well. If you are wanting to be the face of a franchise then you'd best be able to knock interviews out of the park. This is the biggest factor when being considered for a head job. You have to sell your personality and your vision to guys who are prepared to invest millions in your plan. They are not going to be sold by a guy that can't communicate effectively.

2- Candidate does not fit the criteria they are looking for. Guys looking for a first-time head job don't always fit what owners and GMs want out of a candidate. You might very well nail the interview, but there's something missing that makes them pass for another candidate. Loomis, for example, stated they wanted a guy with HC experience. First time guys had no shot at the Saints' job.

3- Too many unknowns. Sometimes a guy is simply too risky to invest in. Bieniemy and Leftwich both have benefitted greatly from being paired with great offensive HC's and great QBs. Matt Nagy failed in Chicago after OCing for Andy Reid, and Josh McDaniels failed in Denver after "coaching" Tom Brady. The owners see this and it presents a potential problem. Zac Taylor however, is having great success in Cincy, which makes the McVay tree look good so far. The Shanahan name is synonymous with success and garners respect in the NFL.

4- Continuity. Some franchises have a very successful system in place. Owners and GMs may not want to run the risk of a new guy disrupting everything.

5- Racism and Nepotism. I put these together because while they can certainly influence decisions, I don't think it's to the point where it is a crisis people like Flores are implying. There are simply more white candidates than minority candidates, and some of the white candidates have family and friends that are well known in the league. Them getting jobs may very well be coincidence. Bad coaches simply aren't keeping jobs. Most coaches are given a 3-4 year leash to mold their rosters and develop them. Some have to rebuild from the start and never can get it going. Some catch success early with an established roster, but fall apart soon after. Culley, Caldwell, Smith...they weren't good HC's. In fact, Culley should have never been given a head job to begin with.

Pro sports are a multi-million dollar investment and the owners aren't going to waste time and money on guys they don't feel can lead their organization.
