If I remember correctly he was considered a hero because he went out there without a harness and ignored his own safety for the fans.
I remember seeing him crawling out there and before the burlap fell, seeing superdome personell trying to pick up the embers on the turf to prevent the field from getting ruined and a fire started. THis was going on as the game was being played on the opposite end of the field.
