Stingy Saints run defense approaching historic NFL territory

53 games - Philadelphia Eagles - Ended in 1992 (Cowboys - Emmitt Smith)
51 games - Los Angeles Rams - Ended in 1968 (49ers - Ken Willard)
47 games - New Orleans Saints - Active
46 games - Baltimore Ravens - Ended in 2001 (Bengals - Corey Dillon)
45 games - Baltimore Colts - Ended in 1972 (Chargers - Mike Garrett)
45 games - St. Louis Cardinals - Ended in 1969 (Saints - Tony Baker)
To their credit, the Detroit Lions didn’t stop trying to run on the New Orleans Saints. they kept up the pressure with 22 carries (against 31 pass attempts), and that stubbornness helped accomplish their own downfall by running out the clock late in the game. The Saints won 35-29 with too little time left for Detroit to try a comeback.
That’s according to plan. The Saints defense takes pride in their ability to stop opposing running backs in their tracks, and that was no different on Sunday. The Lions’ leading rusher was Adrian Peterson, who gained just 36 yards on the ground. As a team, Detroit ran for 90 yards, and their longest play was a 12-yard scramble by quarterback Matthew Stafford.
It extends the Saints’ streak of games played without allowing a 100-yard rusher to 47 games. And that’s approaching an NFL record, held by the Philadelphia Eagles from 1989 to 1992. Led by the legendary Reggie White, those Eagles teams played 53 consecutive games without allowing an opposing runner to reach the 100-yard threshold.
And that broke an even older record set by Deacon Jones and the Los Angeles Rams, who went 51 games from 1965 to 1968 without allowing a 100-yard rusher. Third place belonged to Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens, who didn’t give up 100 yards to a single rusher in 46 games from 1998 to 2001.
Well, third place used to belong to Baltimore. Now it’s been claimed by Demario Davis and the Saints, who surpassed the Ravens with their 47th game. They need to keep it up through the next seven games to break the NFL’s record. Here’s how many yards each of their upcoming opponents’ leading rusher has averaged through the first three weeks of 2020 (but keep in mind that many of them are dealing with injuries):
Los Angeles Chargers: Austin Ekeler, 78.7
Carolina Panthers: Christian McCaffrey, 78.0
Chicago Bears: David Montgomery, 63.7
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ronald Jones, 47.3
San Francisco 49ers: Raheem Mostert, 74.0
Atlanta Falcons: Todd Gurley, 65.7
Denver Broncos: Melvin Gordon, 70.3

We're gonna miss McCaffery and Ekeler due to injury, Montgomery doesn't scare me. The only dude I'd worry about is Mostert. He can legit house one on us

Yea Mostert can be a problem. Good thing is that they also have Jerick McKinnon to take away carries. That 49ers game looks like the toughest test for our run defense on that list. 49ers also have a good run blocking O-Line.

Impressive. I think we can do it. Doubt any Chargers back tops 100, and I don't think McCaffrey will be back and/or the workhorse when we play them. Could see David Montgomery or Melvin Gordon doing it, but I like our odds.

Yea if we do give up 100 yards to a RB...I think the 3 best bets are: 49ers (Mostert or McKinnon), Bears (David Montgomery), & Broncos (Melvin Gordon).
Ekeler & McCaffrey being out is nice...Ronald Jones (Bucs) & Todd Gurley (Falcons) seem unlikely to run for 100 against us. Although, Fournette (Bucs) did run for 100 yards recently.

This is a team record... getting out to an early lead is crucial here as it forces opponents to pass and abandon the run

Are we not in a pass happy era of football?
Short passes out the backfield are almost the same as rushing attempts.

Crazy part is the last 100 yard rusher was Washington's Samaje Perine, who had 117 yards in November of 2017. His 1st of 2 career games over 100 yards
There were a few other 100 rushers against the Saints D earlier in 2017, but it's odd that Perine was the last one.

The 31 other teams are as well, why haven't they stopped the run as well as us?

I’m surprised we didn’t give up a 100 yarder to SF last year

The key is not giving up a big run.
Last year, the longest run given up was 49 yards by AJ Brown, and that was his only carry.
The longest run by a RB was 32 yards.

Why run when you can use the tight end over and over and over? A lot of this can be attributed to a lackluster secondary. Not to totally rain on the parade, because the front seven does a good job of clogging lanes but the back end of the defense is where we've been vulnerable and other teams exploit that.

People saying Montgomery is a good possibility is laughable. He is total garbage. The 49'ers are the team to worry about, and that's only if they get healthy.

Except this streak goes back 47 games, not just this season. Saints were good at covering TEs last season.

49ers and Broncos have 2 solid backs and employ a bit of a timeshare when they are healthy. You really need a workhorse type back, assuming we keep huge runs to a minimum
Posted on 10/9/20 at 12:37 pm to saints5021
If Mostert is healthy by the Saints game, he will get the bulk of the carries and we risk him breaking a long one to add to the stat line. He is one of the only backs I could see stopping the streak.

Watch the Saints’ streak get snapped the same game we have a rusher break 100 yards...

Another one bites the dust. 48 down, 6 to go.

Justin Jackson only got 71 yards, even though he ripped off a 36 yarder.
