Here are some comments that Mike Pereira said about Gruden's job of commentating this past MNF game.

quote:

I am not a fan of Gruden’s. Not today, not yesterday, not when I worked for the NFL and not when I was working on the field as a side judge. He was a loudmouth as a coach who constantly disrespected officials and he is a blowhard in the broadcast booth who spouts off when he doesn’t know what he is talking about.

quote:

THE PLAY: Saints quarterback Drew Brees completes a 9-yard pass to Marques Colston. Atlanta’s Curtis Lofton is called for an illegal hit on a defenseless receiver. Lofton hit Colston helmet-to-helmet, which was acknowledged by ESPN play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico. Replays clearly confirmed the helmet-to-helmet contact before Colston had completed the catch and clearly become a runner.

GRUDEN’S COMMENTS: “I don’t know. Going to get Lofton for spearing. I’d throw the ball every play if that’s a penalty. Hopkins is entitled to play in the middle of the field.”

quote:

THE PLAY: Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan throws an incomplete pass to Reggie Kelly. Kelly is hit from behind by Malcolm Jenkins, who turns his head to the side and hits Kelly with his right shoulder in the area of the lower back. Tough hit, but legal. Jenkins did not hit Kelly in the head or neck area and he did not lead with the crown or hairline part of his helmet. It was exactly what the NFL is asking players to do.

GRUDEN’S COMMENTS: “I don’t know what the difference is than the one on Lofton. If Lofton’s penalty was 15 yards, then that’s 15 yards. I just don’t understand how games are being officiated.”

quote:

Gruden didn’t know the difference between the two hits. Well, let me help. Lofton’s was helmet-to-helmet, while Jenkins’ hit was shoulder to back. Duh!

Gruden needs to learn the rules of the game

You're gonna get me pissed on this one. Looking back on the total game, these wouldn't have made a ton of difference. BUT during the game, I almost broke my 52" tv when the "no call" on Kelley ... wasn't called.

A) The Colston hit could've been a helmet to helmet and/or defenseless player.
B) The "no call" on Kelley was the prime definition of "defenseless player". Dude was in the air and head turned away from the incoming hit.

You simply cannot defend the terrible reffing that was clearly pro saints that particular night.
Don't even get me started on the "non safety" call that was explained away as "shedding the tackler".
That was some fricking garbage. Again, not excuses but let's be somewhat objective here...

ETA: If Mike Pereira spit this garbage to me in person and he actually meant it - we might go to blows. Whew, still heated over some of those calls. If ya messed up, admit it and we're cool... but to defend retarded... well, ya gots ta be put down then.

so Jenkins should have waited for him to catch it, then come down, then turn, then look at him before trying to tackle him? Why don't they just play flag football?

I'm fine with calling the penalty/not calling the penalty - I'm just mad it wasn't called BOTH ways.

Y'all can't be serious with this if you're being objective here.

Im just still trying to figure out how they said NOTHING about Drew Brees a Pro Bowl QB getting tackled by the back of his helmet and having no flag thrown. Bringing a player down by any part of the helmet is a 15 yard penalty long before any new rule changes.

Being objective. The difference is Jenkins hit wasn't helmet to helmet.

That was the ONE penalty that I think the Saints should've gotten called that didn't. Everything else went the Saints way AND some.

But... you're right - being unbiased, that one should've been called.

"Defenseless Player".
Doesn't have to be a helmet to helmet hit. Ask Dunta Robinson the past 2 seasons...

So you and Gruden are in the same boat. Both hits were clearly different, why should they be called the same way?

An objective Falcons fan? Now I've seen everything.

This was unbelievable that it wasn't called. When Drew looks at the ref like, "WTF" you know it was a bad non-call. He rarely does that shite.

I get the definition. But you act as if they called a defenseless player only on Colston's tackle. He got hit helmet to helmet and on Jenkins tackle there was no helmet to helmet contact. He may have been defenseless but that wasn't the penalty on Colston so it's not as clear as you make it seem.

It should've been called "helmet to helmet" not "defenseless player"... the ref used the wrong verbiage.

The problem I have with the helmet to helmet calls is that a lot of time it's because the offensive player moved his head because he is bracing himself for the impact and the defenders head is connected to his shoulder, so sometimes their heads will hit. That's why they they wear helmets.

The rules aren't the problem, it's the refs shitty interpretation of them. You can tell when someone is using their helmet as weapon and when it's incidental contact.

Then, what is defenseless receiver?

DD..
So what you are saying is that the Saints won because of the refs????

1.Keep kicking field goals...in case u dont know
7 points>3points

2.We had one more turnover....even thought ours was for a TD...

Face it you got beat by a better team...
