Would anyone complain if we got the Browns best 1st rd pick and their good TE for jimmy? I think he would be really good in our system. Plus that would give us the number 4 pick in the draft.

Yea you'd have to be moronic not to accept two firsts for Jimmy Graham.

Thinking you could get that is moronic enough

It's hypothetical.

I think we could absolutely get a 1st and a 2nd for him. That'd be close to a no-brainer as well.

And its not just two big hits on the cap. Its all the money tied up in the guards and Cam Jordan.

I don't get the freak-out posts claiming Drew is in a steep decline and we have to WIN NOW! I think Drew keeps himself in excellent condition and has several well above NFL average seasons left if he wants them. I've seen guys talk as if its given that he's only got 2 or 3 years left.

This team absolutely needs to operate with an eye toward the future with the idea that Brees will be our quarterback til 2018 or so. Even then, I can see us get there and he still can play. Kinda like how Tony Gonzales is hanging it up even though everyone knows he can still play at a very high level, I think when Drew hangs it up, he will easily still be a top 10 NFL quarterback.

ANYWAY, Payton is a helluva coach, and with the young defensive talent being developed, does anyone really think that Payton wouldn't have this team stay competetive even with an average quarterback? I for one think he can turn an average QB into a Romo, Matt Ryan, or Carson Palmer (early career) type performer.

Again, I love all Saints players, none all-time as much as Drew. Class all the way. Kind of guy you can absolutely point to and tell your kids, "THAT is the kind of guy you want to be like!" Great family man, community man, brought us our first championship, etc...
BUT

I am a Saints fan first, and I choose to think about the years immediately following his retirement as years that we RELOAD and compete much like the Colts, Packers, 49ers... heck, even the Eagles did this to an extent with McNabb to Foles within just a couple years... Follow an all-time great (or with McNabb, just very good competetive b/c of good QB play) with another well above average QB with years of success following a legend.

To do this, we must be an organization that makes a few of these tough decisions from time-to-time. This scenario allows us to load up on cheap, young talent for the next 5-6 years, based on new CBA rookie deals. It allows us the cap space to NOT be in cap HELL when Brees is done, just Loomis managing a TIGHT cap for a year or two.

Anyway, not trying to "win" an argument, just sharing my thoughts, killing time til free agency...

WHODAT!

Just tag him and go all in on winning it next year. If we win a SB i'd consider doing it

I don't see how with the offensive problems this year, there's much of a chance. With the contract JG is expecting, there won't be much cap space to add any additional weapons on offense. Unlike a fine wine, Brees does not get better with age. We'd have to hit a homerun in free agency to have any sort of noticeable improvement on offense, which is required to have a shot at a SB run next season.

Wouldn't he become a free agent the following year too? So that's pretty much 2 first rounders AND a chance to get Jimmy BACK in free agency? Or am I just misunderstanding this?
