I am cautiously optimistic and prepared for disappointment

If we land Butler, I will be satisfied.

The fact that no deal has been reported seems like a good start, may want to see what the Saints have to offer.

But I have really low expectations with the 49ers involved and just spending $$ on a corner

@49ers: #49ers have signed former Bengals LB Dan Skuta (@DSkuta51) to a two-year contact. #freeagency

It has to at least be on his mind that returning to the D coordinator who made him all world is a good idea

CB Nnamdi Asomugha's potential destinations include Texans, 49ers, Broncos, and Cardinals, per league source. 8:40 PM - 13 Mar 13

PFT tweet from Wednesday

Cardinals are about to cut Kolb and will have more money to offer but are not a contender.

Broncos about to cut Dumervil but just signed Cromartie and still have Bailey... Obviously a contender and with money but the roster is crowded

Texas about to sign Ed Reed and are considered a contender by some. Not sure on their cap situation.

Hypothetically if we sign Asomugha , who gets cut to make cap room?

Looks like the texans have about $11 mil.

Broncos are very pressed against the cap(looks like less than a mil), but releasing Dumervil would give them about another $9 mil.

I posted this in another thread:

If we cut
Jenkins- $2.5 mil
P. Thomas- $2.5 mil
Sproles- $2.25 mil
Strief- $2.25 mil
Rescinding the offers to Ivory or De La Puente- $2 mil

Everyone else would save us under $2 mil. Come June 1st a lot of these numbers would change, but that doesn't help us in FA now.

HIGHLY doubtful we go after another corner with our very limited cap room remaining.

Once the Ed Reed deal goes through, Texans will be closer to our situation regarding cap space but likely a little more money.

And I don't see Nnamdi going to the Broncos after looking at their cap/roster situation.

Why wouldn't we cut Ivory?

By my calculations, and a website that somebody posted on another thread yesterday. I believe the saints had around 10.8 million after the restructured deals, so minus 2.2 from that I think we can afford victor butler and Nnamdi with 8.6 million in cap room.

Technically he isn't signed(though the money is on a hold since he has an offer sheet), so we can only rescind the offer.

It's possible but unlikely imo. I think we are done messing with our current players' contracts unless we find a really good deal and need the money.

Expect maybe one more FA to be signed(likely third tier and a LT or OLB).

About $5.5 mil left, but you need some of that for draft picks.

You're probably right but damn it, I want another Super Bowl.

Brees ain't getting any younger and we're not talking about some average FA corner here.

Can't the draft picks be signed after the June cuts?

If they're willing to cut a somewhat "high earner", yeah, but most of the cuts will be guys making very little/not counting against the top 51 deals. Draft picks won't cost that much, though.

ETA: dropping Smith's $3m base salary should be enough to sign the draft picks. Pretty sure designating him as a post 6/1 cut would actually free up $4m this season, but I can't say with absolute certainty that would work since his base salary is treated like he's actually being cut on 6/1, the same day his roster bonus kicks in, but he's obviously not on the roster anymore.

Man I wish I remembered that website that somebody posted yesterday, cause Im pretty sure we have more than 5.5 left.

Eta: I'm not saying you are wrong, but I want to confirm it with that site.

Smith's roster bonus actually kicks in on the 12th day of the league year if I'm remembering right, long before June 1st.

I think at that point we wouldn't save much by cutting him(not sure the exact number, but his roster bonus could be up to $3.5 mil).

I know right know we'd only save another $1.8 mil cutting him. Being that he isn't due a signing bonus next year I'm not sure if we'd save anything on top of that come June 1st.

Basically after taking the pay cut Smith saved almost as much as he would have saved cutting him. Do you think we could have gotten a player as good as him for $1.8 mil this year? Possible, but I don't see the Saints going that route.
