Saints improved this year, but....

...they're still weak behind the starters.
So far, when everyone is on the field and clicking, the Saints are unstoppable. But taking one (or in this case, two) important players out caused a cascade of failures ending with losing to the Iggles.
Taysom's injury took the mystery out of our plays for their DC. We might have overcome that, though, the way our receivers were getting loose. However, losing McCoy was the straw that broke our backs.
Carr could only function effectively when he didn't have pass rushers in his face, and losing McCoy caused the interior of the OL to become porous, with the obvious and evident result. Same for Kamara - can't get loose when defenders are punching through the line from jump.
Our D is still pretty damn good, but can only hold up for so long when the offense can't stay on the field and score points.
So we're probably doomed to a year of boom or bust games, depending on who is playing and who is walking the sidelines in a boot or an arm sling.
Just my opinion.

Downside of having your backup center playing LG. When the Center gets injured, you are immediately downgraded at 2 positions.

Excellent point, I hadn't thought of that.
Just thinking out loud - is it too late for CDA to get a backup center for the team? If nothing else, this injury has to show how vulnerable we are at that one position.
We'd have to probably remove someone from the active 53 if he did, so who goes if he pulls that trigger?
Or, does he keep rolling the dice thinking that if he loses McCoy again we can survive the remainder of one game without him then elevate someone from the practice squad or headhunt a replacement if needed after the game? That would be a truly stupid thing to do, but then again....
If nothing else, get a competent center on the practice squad so if you lose McCoy again you're only without him for the remainder of the game.

Yea, absolutely no depth on offense. Good starting unit, but huge drop-off if someone goes down. Our deepest on O is probably TE. On D, we are ok depth at Dline, not great but meh. LB I feel is average depth, CB is great, and S is not that good regarding backups.
I know we won't get both, but I wish we could somehow trade or find a way to get a good 3rd WR option, or better Oline depth signing.

Of the two I think it's obvious that OL depth is more important. If/when we get Taysom back, I think we're okay with Shaheed and Olave plus Kamara catching balls.
But if we lose McCoy again, or another OL the whole thing might just crash and burn again.
Plus, our D has to really step up and find ways to win the game for us if/when the offense is struggling. It's easy to play defense when your offense is putting up points like crazy.

You would have to find a diamond in the rough from someone's practice squad that has been overlooked by their team. A major problem when you are constantly in cap hell is you have to gut your depth to field a competent team. There were so many question marks about the starting 5, and it was a given that if any of the starting 5 went down there would be problems. Best solution, assuming McCoy is out a few weeks, is they begin working with one of the non-starters to take over the Center duties and let Patrick go back to LG where he was playing very well.
An optimistic viewpoint, that may be the best front 4 this team sees all season. I don't keep up that much with other teams, but when a lot of the talking heads were talking about Philly's defense there were a lot of "one of the best fronts in the NFL" type of comments

We’re very thin especially on offense. I’m hoping that Kubiak will be able to adjust as well as he was able to scheme the start of the season. Teams now have a decent amount of tape on our new tendencies.

I believe Taysom would have helped us win the game, especially in the area Kamara got stopped on 3rd and 4th down. I also think we can win plenty of games without Taysom and I say that with him being my favorite player. I don't personally have a problem with our scheme going into the game. Philly's run D was bad the first 2 weeks. I do wish we'd tried more outside runs. I wish the 3rd down play where Carr split out wide was run as a true wild cat, Carr come off the field, put an extra lineman in and get a yard for a 1st.
As far as running man when we gave up the big play I don't have a problem with that either, end of the game. HS teams run man all day long and I don't know the last time I've seen half the D
collide with each other. That's stupid and you should be able to run man in the NFL w/o that happening. I get trying to make him make a throw in tight coverage, their QB didn't look good either. A win next week will make it all better. Falcons can choke just as good as we can.

Having either Taysom or McCoy for the whole game would likely have made the difference. Having Taysom along with Kamara would have prevented Philly from keying on Kamara during stretch plays to the boundary. It would also have given Philly nightmares when Taysom got the ball: is he going to run it? Is he going to pass it (not likely, but still a possibility)? Having two backfield threats would have allowed the Saints to move the ball better, even without McCoy.
Having McCoy without Taysom was already looking like a good alternate plan as well. The iggles aren't weak on DL, and that first series we were moving the ball at will. If McCoy doesn't go down I also think it's a different game.
We can likely win without one or the other, but not without both. It makes us too one-dimensional and takes away the deep ball when we're facing defenses that can get penetration.
