I'll admit that I wanted the Saints to draft a pass rusher in the 1st round; and I'm not sure why they didn't. However, since we can't give Robinson back and re-pick, we might as well look at two positive reasons he's here.
#1--the NFL is a passing league and you can never have enough good defenders
#2--After Greer, Porter, and Jenkins there is a HUGE drop-off in talent at corner. I know he's from LSU, but Randall Gay is absolutely horrible. If Sharper doesn't resign and Jenkins moves to safety, then drafting Robinson becomes even bigger.

I really thought that there was some good talent available at LB and DE when the Saints picked. But obviously Loomis and company felt that Robinson was better. After their recent history of draft picks, I'm inclined to trust them. I know that in 2006, no one was getting excited when we drafted a guard from Bloomsberg; and a WR in the 7th round from that football powerhouse, Hofstra.

Look at the early part of round 2. Which of those players would you have wanted the Saints to select over Robinson?

I was surprised by the selection too, but when I look at who was available after the Colts took Jerry Hughes (who the Saints were going to select, according to several sources) I think the Saints got the best player left on the board.

I don't think Sergio Kindle would fit in our defense because I don't think he could defend agasinst the pass as a OLB and he lacks strength to play DE in a 4-3.

And there was the knee injury possibly requiring micro fracture surgery to consider as well with Kindle. If he has the surgery he could miss the entire 2010 season.

What it boils down to is this.

Injuries to both of our starting corners last season killed our ability to play man coverage. Not being able to play man threw a wrench into GW's exotic blitz packages.

If P-Rob can come in and hold down the nickel and add quality depth, you will see a lot more pressure on opposing qb's and it will also help us slow down the run.

The frick? Randall Gay is very solid for a nickel. He is also pretty effective blitzing. I don't know what the hell games you have been watching.

Funny, Randall Gay is brought up.

I was just watching the first half of the Cardinals-Saints game.

Larry Fitzgerald didn't have a catch in the fist half until the two minute warning. Greer pretty much shut him down or the defense got to Warner before he could get the attempt to Fitzgerald.

Then, of course, he catches two first downs back to back thrown by Leinart. Both on Gay.

Gay is best in deep zone, thus the .5 tag.

What I feel about Loomis is he does what he says. He takes the highest rated player on the board. This is a vague statement as I am sure he has multiple choices per selection. He takes the highest rated player in need or in trade value.

True dat.

Remember last year when Greer went out for a play against the Colts and Usama Young came in to play corner? He got torched by Manning. I don't think Sean Payton wants to go down that road again.

Robinson will provide great depth as well as get plenty of PT in the nickel and dime packages. Considering who was left on the draft board at the end of round one, I think he was a good pick.

he doesn't suck, but he isn't a great corner. He is a serviceable CB.

we need as many cover corners as we can get in our defense. it's really a beautiful thing.

Gregg Williams stressed when we first brought him in that Nickel Back, MLB, and the two safeties are the most important positions in his defense.

Slot receivers are usually the hot route and with Gregg's reliance on the blitz to generate pressure, we need a good man corner in the nickel. I think we have our guy!

I for one was pumped about the pick. In the first, I wanted Spoonman, Pouncey or one of the top-5 corners. Spoon and Pouncey were gone so I was happy with our pick.

Just said this on another post before I noticed this one, but Detillier said yesterday that the Vikings really wanted Robinson and traded back to 34 thinking that he would still be available there. New Orleans had planned to draft their pass rusher at 32, Jerry Hughes, but when Indy screwed that up, they took the cornerback that they wanted knowing that he would not be available beyond 34.

Cornerback is probably the hardest position on the field to just plug in a player. If you're not set at CB, it really opens up the possibility of getting torched multiple times a game. I think we all learned this over the years (Fred Thomas, Jason David, last year when Porter and Greer were out).

So having such an important position set for the next few years is definitely a good thing. I think the FO felt that they would have a better chance at plugging in a pass rusher or OLB and not falling off too much.

Slot recievers killed us all year long. Robinson was an excellent pickup.
